NEWQUAY TOWN COUNCIL BUDGET
Newquay Town Council held a Full Council meeting on Monday 27th January 2014. The purpose of
this meeting was to debate and decide upon each committee’s budget for the 2014/2015 financial
year. Two budgets were put forward for discussion, the Finance & Policy (F&P) Committee’s
proposed budget and the budget proposed by the Scrutiny Working Party.
At the start of the meeting the chairman of the F&P Committee explained that he would not be
proposing the F&P budget, as he did not believe that members of the council had all of the figures
and information available to them. Therefore Councillor Leadbetter proposed the F&P Committee
budget as he and other members felt a lot of committee time had gone into the budget setting
process over a number of months. The end result was a culmination of the proposed budgets of the
individual committees.
After a lengthy discussion in which both sides put across very clear ideas of what they thought the
budget should be. The vote was split with 8 voting for the F&P Committee budget proposal and 8
voting for the proposal by the Scrutiny Working Party. In this situation the Mayor of Newquay,
Councillor Sandy Carter, has the deciding vote (casting vote) as is his right as the Chairman.
The Scrutiny budget was a lower amount than the F&P Budget, however some members felt it could
still provide the necessary services for Newquay
The implications for the residents of Newquay are that the Town Council portion of the council tax
precept will rise by 79.8% rather than the 84% as suggested by the F&P Committee. This rise means
there will be an increase of £49.34 a year in Council Tax to those living in an average Band D house,
equating to an increase of 95p a week.
The increase in the precept is needed due to Newquay Town Council taking over many new
responsibilities such as CCTV, Public toilets and weed killing. Services that Cornwall Council were
going to have cut due to its own budgetary restraints.
ST. PIRAN DAY PARADE
Newquay Town Council is holding a St. Piran day parade on 5th March 2014. This parade has been
organised by Councillor Isabel Pascoe and members of the Town Council Office Staff. The parade will
feature children and teachers from many of the local schools around the Newquay area.
Children and Teachers will meet on the Killacourt at 13:30 and will start parading through the streets
at 14:00. The parade will be stopping at certain locations throughout Newquay town at which point
the children of the schools will start playing music to add to the celebrations. The final stop for music
will be at the Piazza outside of the Lighthouse Cinema once the children have played their music the
parade will then move into the Lighthouse Cinema, where drinks and Saffron buns will be provided
by the Lighthouse Cinema and Warrens Bakery.
There is also currently an art show at the Lighthouse Cinema that exhibits artistic works done by the
children of the participating schools for the parade. The art was put up on 15th February and will be
staying until 15th March, if you have a chance please make your way to the Lighthouse Cinema and
support this wonderful art work.
MAYORAL CHARITY DINNER
Newquay Town Council is holding a Mayoral charity dinner on 5th March 2014. This dinner has been
organised by the Mayor Councillor Sandy Carter and his secretary Mrs Judie Bashford.
The dinner will take place at the Esplanade hotel who have kindly given a special offer on rooms for
anyone attending the meal who wishes to stay at the hotel after. The evening will comprise of a
three course meal/buffet which will be followed by an auction with the proceeds going to charity.
The Mayor Sandy Carter has chosen the Surf Lifesaving Club and Newquay Cormorants Swimming
Club to be the Mayors sponsored charities this year. There will also be live music played by Route 66
and a chance to dance and converse.
This dinner may only be attended by invite, and we hope the people attending will help us to raise
lots of money for the Mayors chosen charity.
