The Gaslight Princess Program and Camp Purpose of the Gaslight Princess Program Are you ready to make wonderful memories for a lifetime? The Gaslight Princess Program and Camp is designed for girls, ages 5 to 12, who are looking to improve upon skills that promote self-confidence and poise and find mentoring from today's young leaders. We aim to provide young girls the opportunity to learn about community service and leadership with hopes that they will serve as role models for their peers throughout their community. It also serves to encourage young ladies to consider joining the Miss America family as a contestant or volunteer in the future. The Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. This assistance is not just for the handful of young women who become Miss America, but is available to the over 12,000 young women who compete in the state and local competitions as well. Rich in history and social significance, the Miss America Organization is a not-forprofit organization that has maintained a tradition for many decades of empowering young women to achieve their personal and professional goals, while providing a forum in which to express their opinions, talent and intelligence. Scholarships have been the cornerstone of the Miss America program since 1945 when Bess Myerson was the first Miss America to receive a scholarship from the Organization. The current Miss Jeffersontown and Miss Louisville local title holders, and their Outstanding Teens, will serve as mentors to Gaslight Princesses. Participants will have the opportunity to attend brief educational sessions taught by volunteers within the organization and ride on a Princess Float in the Gaslight Festival Parade. Princesses will also learn and perform a production number during the 2013 Greater Louisville Scholarship Pageant on October 20, 2012 and get "crowned" on-stage by Miss Louisville/Jeffersontown and the Outstanding Teens. The Princess Program will have an optional Community Service component for those wanting to go above and beyond the crown. This optional Community Service Project is designed to encourage the Gaslight Princess to reach beyond her title and strive to become a “Princess with a Purpose,” making a difference in people’s lives through charitable and community endeavors. See the Community Service Application for more details. Each Princess is to provide her own white dress for the Scholarship Pageant Production Number. It can have some “bling” on it but be sure to remain completely age appropriate. PLEASE do not feel that you must purchase an expensive dress! There are many wonderful deals out there. Princesses will receive a crown, sash, photo trophy, princess t-shirt and a bag filled with princess goodies.
