____Biology’s Big Ideas________
AP biology provides academically motivated students with an introductory college level experience in
the study of life. This course’s emphasis is on the application of biological knowledge and critical
thinking to questions about the living world. This will include developing skills needed to evaluate the
quality of data sources and discussing social concerns related to biology.
This course is concerned with four big ideas:
#1 Evolution------The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.
#2 Energy, Matter and Homeostasis--------Biological systems utilize energy and molecular building blocks
to grow, reproduce and to maintain homeostasis.
#3 Information------Living systems store , retrieve ,transmit and respond to information essential to life
processes.
#4 Interactions------Biological systems interact and these interactions have complex properties.
