Home Connections – Grade 1 Make 10! Dear Family, In school we are learning that 10 is a very important number. We are doing learning activities that help the students find number combinations that make 10. For example, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, and 1 and 9 make 10. The Make 10! game will help you and your child think about the different number combinations for 10. Have fun playing Make 10! Two people play this game. To play this game, you need to cut out the number cards from the other piece of paper. Shuffle the cards and pass out 5 cards to each person. Do not show your cards to the other person. Put the rest of the cards in a pile facedown between the two players. The purpose of the game is to be the first player to wind up with no cards. You can get rid of two cards when the numbers on the card make 10 (e.g., 3 and 7, 6 and 4, 1 and 9). To begin, both players look at the 5 cards they have been given and see if there is a pair of numbers that make 10. If there is a pair (or more than one pair), the player sets the pair (s) of cards aside. Now Player A asks Player B for one of the cards he or she is looking for, in order to make another pair of 10. If Player B has the card, it must be given to Player A, who can set the make-ten pair aside. If Player B does not have the card, Player A must pick up a card from the centre pile and add it to his or her hand. Then the turn passes to Player B, and the game continues. If you use all the cards in the centre pile, then the two players take turns asking each other for a card they need. The game finishes when a player has got rid of all his or her cards.
