Why?
Because many of these plants spread vegetatively - small pieces of the plant have the ability
to grow without seed.
Because many of these plants also produce high numbers of seeds and some produce seeds
that can lie dormant in soil for years, sprouting long after introduction to a new area.
Because all invasive plants have negative economic, environmental and social impacts.
Because the heat of commercial composting processes may not be enough to kill all plant
parts, including the seeds.
Because all it takes is one seed to germinate to create a bigger invasive plant problem.
Because compost is used throughout the Island and is a valuable and desirable “green”
product.
