1 rd Newsletter No. 14 Term 2 – Week 6 Thursday 23 May 2013 Kalinda Primary School’s Vision Statement A learning community with shared values, fostering a life-long love of learning through meaningful experiences, to embrace a constantly changing society. From the Principal……………. OPEN NIGHT It was great to see so many members of our school community visit the school on Open Night. Although the weather was cold and wet the school was certainly a cheery place to be with lots of things going on. I hope everyone enjoyed their children’s work, the art room, games in the stadium, the choir and the general buzz of children and their learning. VISIT FROM MS AMBUJ SHARMA When you were here on Open Night I hope people viewed the posters and photos around the walls which displayed our link with Japan and India. On Monday Ms Ambuj Sharma, Principal of Jain International Residential School, will be visiting us for four days. When we visited India last year we stayed at the Jain School and Ambuj was a very gracious host, showing us all around the school and explaining the education system to us. Ambuj and I share the belief that our children gain a common knowledge of our different cultures and values, then they will be able to work together in the future in a very positive way. Ambuj will be spending time with our teachers and in our classrooms with the children. We will be sharing ideas of education and cultures. CONGRATULATIONS TO SECONDARY PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR Bronwyn Harcourt, Croydon Community School North-Eastern Victoria Region Bronwyn is an innovative and ground-breaking principal – a visionary leader who unites people behind a common purpose. Since 2000 she has overseen the merger with Pembroke Secondary College and then the separation as a Community School. Her vision for this school is to provide high quality programs for students who would otherwise be lost to education. Bronwyn’s vision has united all staff. The school now build students’ literacy and numeracy skills and increase their employability or ability to pursue further training. Bronwyn has given hope to people who had previously lost confidence in schools and the system in general. She gives people chances and opportunities that would otherwise not be there. 2 EASTLAND ART SHOW I hope many families visited Eastland to have a look at our Kalinda Art Show as part of Education Week. Libby Shaw did a terrific job of organising all the art works and I was indeed very proud to see work from children right across the school. Thank you so much Libby. OPEN NIGHT SURVEY To help us review the success of this year's Open Night, and to assist us with planning for next year, please take a moment to complete our Open Night Survey. It will only take a couple of minutes. We'd love to hear your feedback! http://bit.ly/186DQla VISIT BY BRYAN AND TED TO MAROONDAH CITY COUNCIL’S VOLUNTEER LUNCHEON Bryan and Ted do so much around the school and are really so much a part of our community. HIROMI HAGIHARA LOTE TEACHER 5 Fractions Fractions! The very word can strike fear in the heart of many children and adults alike. Fractions, however, are just equal parts of a whole (like a pizza of a pizza) or of a group ( half of the grade were girls). There are many areas of our daily life where we competently use fractions and can assist our children to develop a positive approach to this part of maths. Here are some suggestions you may like to try at home: Get out the measuring cups and spoons! Let your child play with them in the bath to experience onehalf cup or one-third teaspoon. Fold pieces of paper into half and half again to make greeting cards. Point out that the paper is folded into four equal parts. Ask your child to cut a cake into equal parts to share with their family, or cut fruit into halves and quarters. Use an egg carton to show fractions, e.g. take half of the eggs out of the carton, what is 1/12 of the carton. Demonstrate the equality of fractions by cutting up chocolate or biscuits into, firstly unequal parts, and discuss why they don’t like the idea of sharing this and then into equal parts. Children very quickly understand the importance of fractions being equal sized when they think they will have less of a treat than their siblings. Look at a pizza and the way it is cut. Discuss whether the parts are equal. Discuss how the white line in the middle of a road represents the half way point. There are many other ways to look at fractions in our everyday life. Hopefully, together we can encourage your child to have a positive outlook towards the dreaded fraction. Anita Elliott Junior School Co-ordinator WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN Collecting until 30th June 2013 So far we have tallied 2,340 points. Fantastic! AN UPDATE FROM SUNSMART: ‘From May put sun gear away’ (More from: http://www.sunsmart.com.au/default.asp) Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, muscles and in the prevention of osteoporosis. The sun is the best natural source of vitamin D and also the major cause of skin cancer, so in Victoria it's important to get the balance right. From May to August when UV levels are low (below 3), put your hat away and ensure that you get some sun for vitamin D. At this time of the year, it is safe to expose your face, arms and hands to midday winter sun for 2-3 hours spread over the week. People with naturally very dark skin have different sun exposure requirements, as the additional melanin in their skin acts like a natural sunscreen. Therefore, they require approximately 3-6 times the amount recommended for fair to olive skin types. Please feel free to see me should you have any questions about anything ‘From the Sports Desk’ this week! If you have recently moved or changed your phone number or mobile number, please let us know as soon as possible. This is very important, especially if your child is sick or injured and we need to contact you in an emergency. Also, from time to time we may need to send out an alert SMS regarding evacuations, cancellation of events, updates on camps, etc. Please send your new details in by letter, phone, or email to [email protected] GILL KNOWLES ADMIN. What goes up will not always come down…………. Due to DEECD Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, any items that end up on the roof – balls, shoes, hats, etc. - will stay up there. We are not able to send anyone up on the roof to get them down. If we have tradesmen on the property they are sometimes able to retrieve things from the roof, but only if the weather is good and only if they have the time. Please discuss this with your children and encourage them to stay away from the buildings when they are playing ball games. Ball games should only be played in the designated areas. Uniform Shop Our Uniform Shop is located next to the Multi-Purpose Room at the front of the school. Opening hours are from 3 – 3.45pm on Monday afternoons. Order forms are available at the office if you cannot make it during these hours. If you have any queries, please contact us through the school on 9876-3289.
