or personal wireless device, such as an iPod,
tablet, laptop or smartphone, is a common
way to learn and communicate. Using
technology will also be an important part of
our students’ future education and careers.
This brochure can’t cover every possible situation or
circumstance. Remember that
in every situation
, the teacher
or other school staff member decides whether or not
technology use is allowed. A teacher may decide that
technology use is not appropriate in a situation or location
even if it is allowed under normal circumstances.
T
he information
in this brochure will help
students use school assigned and personal
devices in a responsible, respectful, kind and
honest manner. This information supports
existing district policies, including the KASD
Acceptable Use of Technology Resources
agreement and policies 7540 (Acceptable Use
of Internet and Network) and 7542 (Access to
District Technology Resources From Personally
Owned Communication Devices).
P
ersonal devices are NOT required, and we
will provide access to technology for all
students when it is a required part of their
learning. Students must be logged into the
district network when using their personal
device at school. A staff member may
confiscate a device if it is being used in
violation of law, district policy or school rules. Can I Charge My Device at School?
Students are responsible for bringing their device to school
fully charged. While it may be possible to plug in your device
at school, there is no guarantee that this will be possible.
What Network Should I Use?
Students must connect personal devices to the district’s
network when using their device at school.
Using 3G/4G
networks, wireless hotspots or other networks is not allowed
and is subject to disciplinary action.
What If I’m Having Problems With My
Device?
Personal Devices:
Students should try to solve problems with
their device just as they would at home. A teacher may ask
you to stop using your device temporarily if the
troubleshooting is interfering with learning.
School Assigned
Devices:
If you are experiencing an issue with your school
assigned device, see your teacher for assistance.
Loss, Damage or Theft
Bringing your own device to school has big learning benefits,
but there are some risks involved. Students should record the
serial number of their personal device and turn on tracking
software if available. Neither the KASD nor J.R.Gerritts are
responsible for the loss or theft of a personal device or any
damage that may occur at school. Report any theft to an
administrator as soon as possible. See the “Chromebook Loan
Agreement” for more information regarding school assigned
devices.
BOTTOM LINE:
In any situation, the teacher has the authority to determine whether or not
students may use their devices, and how those devices will be used.
Failure to observe these rules will result in immediate confiscation of your device and may result in additional
disciplinary actions. To the extent permitted by law, administration may confiscate and search or hold a device if there
is reasonable suspicion that the use of the device has violated the law, a district policy, or a school rule.
