An inter-professional team of OUWB School of Medicine faculty members won the 2013 Building Michigan Health
Care Workforce Award for Education and Training Strategies for the OUWB’s Art and Practice of Medicine Course
on educating medical students about the influenza vaccine.
“Although these are not
yet practicing
physicians, positive
attitudes towards the
vaccine will eventually
result in improved
vaccination rates for
these future physicians
and their patients.”
- Nelia Afonso, Assistant

importance of vaccination for health
care workers. Students also learned vaccination counseling and vaccine
administration practice. The course concluded with students vaccinating
consenting classmates. An end of semester exam assessed students’
counseling and vaccine administration skills.
Dr. Nelia Afonso developed the innovative program in 2011 for the OUWB Art
and Practice of Medicine course. As the course’s director, Afonso, assistant
dean, Community Integration and Outreach, collaborated with an
interdisciplinary team comprised of Dr. Jeffrey Band, director, Infectious
Diseases, Stephanie Swanberg, MSI, assistant professor and information literacy and eLearning librarian, OUWB
Medical Library, Maurice Kavanagh, director, Clinical Skills Training and Simulation Center, Betty Thompson,
clinical nurse II, Occupational Health Services and Christine Schemansky, director, Occupational Health Services.

“Medical students need to be educated and motivated about influenza vaccination because of their interaction with
patients and their future roles as health care professionals,” says Afonso.

Student surveys before and after the course helped gauge the impact of the educational experience. The surveys
indicated a significant improvement in attitudes and an appreciation for the hands-on vaccination experience.
“Although these are not yet practicing physicians, positive attitudes towards
the vaccine will eventually result in improved vaccination rates for these
future physicians and their patients,” says Afonso.

The result of the intervention has already impacted the community, as a
majority of the class volunteered to work at several community-based
influenza vaccination drives during the 2011-12 and 2012-13. They
administered free vaccinations during the influenza season to more than 250
people who otherwise would not have had access.
