AISD Positive Behavior Support

Cafeteria Monitor Training
Behavior RTI- Universal Level

Focus on common areas of the building
including:
– Hallways
– Cafeteria
– Playground
– Arrival
– Dismissal
What does behavior RTI look
like in the common areas?






Behavioral expectations (rules) are posted
Students are taught expectations
Students and staff can state the behavioral
expectations
Adults monitor expected behavior
Students are reinforced for appropriate
behaviors
Misbehaviors are consistently corrected
Using Pre-correction
Remind students of the expectations in
an effort to prevent problem behaviors
from occurring
 Example- “Remember when you go to
line up you should walk and stay in a
single file line.”

Using Behavioral Narration
Step 1: Notice those students who are
following expectations.
 Step 2: Tell the students what you have
noticed about their behaviors.
 Example- “I see everyone at this table is
seated on their bottom and are keeping
their hands to themselves.”

Using Active Supervision
Be Visible
 Circulate

– Move around and towards potential
problems

Scan
– Continuously monitor the entire area
Using an Attention Signal

Lights out, flashing lights, sign, etc.

What is expected= silence

Provide feedback to students
Using 3:1 Ratio of Interactions

Interact with students at least 3 times
more often when the students are
behaving appropriately than when they
are misbehaving
Positive Rewards/Incentives
Verbal Praise- way to go, good job,
keep it up, etc.
 Thumbs up/High five
 Soar Tickets
 Communication with teacher (through
clip board sheet)

Cafeteria Consequences
Speak privately to student- remind
student of expectation
 Inform teacher (via clipboard)
 Move student to isolated space
 Contact administrator

Situation 1:
You are monitoring a 5th class of 25 students.
10 of the students appear to be meeting all
expectations. 15 students are
talking loudly to their peers and spinning
around in their seats.
How can you acknowledge the students who
are meeting expectations. What can you say
or do?
What steps should you take with those students
who are not following expectations?
Situation 2:
You have noticed that students in a 2nd
grade class often run to throw away
their trash and will frequently leave
napkins on the table.
How should you handle this situation?
Situation 3
The cafeteria has gotten very loud and
many students are yelling.
What do you do to get everyone’s
attention? What should you say or do?
