Revision List Drinks Can Light Project Electronics You will need to know the following: All about LED’s – Long leg is positive, a resistor must be put in front of it to protect it. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. *An LED only lets current flow through it in 1 direction! (from – to +) A resistor slows down the flow of current in a circuit. PCB stands for “Printed Circuit Board”. You should know roughly how a PCB is made. – The circuit is 1st drawn on the computer using Crocodile Clips. It is then changed into PCB layout using PCB wizard software. It is then cut out using the Milling Machine. A PCB is used so that you don’t have lots of wires, the circuit can be kept small, and it is easier to fault find. Circuits Know how to draw the circuit diagram for your Drinks Light Project. Plastics There are 2 main plastics: Thermoplastics (used a lot in school). When they are heated they can be shaped and bent. When they are cool they harden. This plastic was used for your project. Acrylic is the most common type. Thermosetting plastics (not used in schools) Used to make computer cases, plugs etc. Line bending machine was used to fold your acrylic. Plastic is an insulator. (does not conduct electricity) Advantages of plastic – Doesn’t rust, durable, already finished, easy to shape, light, lots of colours available. Woods Your clock project was made from birch plywood. Revise hardwood, softwoods and manufactured boards. Revision Lists for some Subjects Area’s will be distributed in class.
