Local Gardening Volunteer Groups
Friends of the Werribee Park Heritage Orchard
Werribee Park Heritage Orchard is a beautiful antique
orchard dating back to the 1870s. Some of the old heritage
fruit varieties have survived - mainly quince, pear and apple.
The friends group is continuing to replant and maintain these
heritage plants to restore this treasure to its former glory.

Karen Kitchen Garden
The historic kitchen garden at Werribee Park Mansion is once again full of thriving
vegetables and herbs thanks to the hard work of a group of volunteers from mostly Karen
and African communities. The innovative project, lead by Parks Victoria in conjunction with
AMES, is now offering volunteers Horticulture and Vocational English classes, as well as
being a healthy outdoor activity.

Mambourin Sensory Garden
Over three years a small group of people with disabilities converted a vacant block of almost
two acres into a beautiful garden paradise for the whole community to enjoy. The garden
showcases drought resistant plants and provides a tranquil setting to sit and reflect, soak in
the sweet fragrance or watch the ducks as they paddle through the pond. The gardens are
maintained by people with disabilities, through an employment program. This garden is
open to the public seven days a week.

Food Swaps
Food Swaps are local gatherings where
people swap excess homegrown produce, food and
gardening extras. Items may include fruit, vegetables,
herbs, eggs, seeds, baked goods, chutneys and jams and
worm juice, but may easily extend to skills shares,
gardening tips, excess clean jars, old pots, and seasonal
recipes.
It's very casual and no money changes hands. It's up to the swapper to decide what is fair.
It’s a great way to meet other like-minded locals. Bring a thermos for yourself on cool days
and if you’re in the cooking frame of mind, a wonderful dish to share that you have cooked
with your home grown fruit or vegetables.
