HOW TO GET MORE OUT OF THE MASS
(SERIES)
Missed from Introductory Rite last week.
This Penitential Rite prayer called the absolution
prayers does not pardon Mortal Sins. Forgiveness of
Mortal Sins (see CCC 1854 – 1864) has to be obtained
during the Sacrament of Reconciliation (before
coming to Mass).
HOW TO GET MORE OUT OF THE MASS (Series)
PART OF THE MASS EXPLAINED
The part of the Mass that concluded with the Collect is called the
Introduction Rite. Now we begin the Liturgy of the Word.
THE LITURGY OF THE WORD IS COMPRISED OF SCRIPTURE
READINGS, A HOMILY, THE PROFESSION OF FAITH AND THE
PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL. When we gather for Mass we hear our
story – God’s Story of His love for us through the Sacred Scriptures.
These scriptures re-enforce what we believe, to whom we belong and
our relationship with others and with God. “Faith comes by hearing.”
St. Paul said (Romans 10:17). We also need to listen to the Word of
God. To listen, we need an active engaged mind that focuses on the
Word of God.
THE FIRST READING is generally taken from the Old Testament
except during Easter or certain saint’s days. This first reading highlights
the Gospel in one of many ways. To show how a prophecy in the Old
Testament is fulfilled through Jesus Christ in the Gospel to make a
contrast between events and personalities in the Old Testament and the
Gospel. The Old Testament points us towards Christ in the Gospel.
THE RESPONSORIAL PSALM – The Psalms that we proclaim at Mass
come from the book of Psalms in the Old Testament. From the time of
the Jews, Psalms were a regular part of worship and the early
Christians continued this practice of singing psalms in their worship.
THE SECOND READING is a semi continuous reading taken from the
Letters of St. Paul in the New Testament. They are meant to support,
encourage, correct and guide as one would listen to the age advice of a
grandparent or mentor.
THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION – We stand as a sign of reverence. It
consists of one verse taken from the Gospel. It is preceded and
followed by “Alleluia” which means “Praise God”.
THE GOSPEL is linked with the First Reading and the Psalm. The
priest and the people sign themselves on the forehead, lips and chest
before the Gospel is proclaimed as a sign that we belong to Jesus in
thought, word and deed. The word Gospel means “Good News” – The
best news we can hear is Jesus Christ speaking to us. We stand out of
respect. Incense and extra candles are used on solemn feasts to
indicate that Christ is speaking to us through the Gospel we hear.
The readings one hears at Mass are preprogrammed for a three year
cycle called the lectionary. Catholics who attend Mass daily hear
almost the entire Bible read to them in the course of three years.
One of the great Scripture scholars of the Early Church, Origin (3rd
century) urged Christians to respect Christ’s presence in the Gospel as
they respect His presence in the Host. “But if you are so careful as to
preserve His body and rightly so how do you think that there is less guilt
to have neglected God’s word than to have neglected His body’.(To
continue next week).
