Overview of Contestants Responsibilities
Fill out and sign the application commitment letter and turn in to the Sanibel Community House by
January 8, 2016.
The interviews to choose the 5 contestants will be held throughout the day on Wed. January 13 th. You
will be notified of your time and if this date not possible for you, we will try to adjust to your schedule.
The most important factors include:
 Authenticity and the background story of the recipe; emotional and deeply connected to the
you, the family chef
 Recipe must be cooked from scratch
 What is your favorite part of being in the kitchen; why do you love to cook
 No cooking is necessary at this interview
The 3 interviewers (Craig Chapman, the producer of the Real Food Real Kitchens TV show and book-azine, Salli Kirkland and Marge Meek) are looking not only for the recipes, but also are the contestants
fun, can they speak well on the fly, tell stories well and just overall be good on camera?
Once chosen, starting the week of January 13th, photos, press releases and social media exposure will
begin. Each of you will have a bio and pictures in our local papers. Key to fundraising is getting your
friends and associates involved. We will work with you and support your efforts by giving your ideas on
what has worked in the past and by being present at your parties. We are your partner in making this a
success, but ultimately the $5,000 minimum is yours to raise.
The Cooking with the Islands’ Stars, held on Wednesday, February 24th at 6:30pm, will be a production
with script, lights, music, RFRK video and banter from the judges and the master of ceremonies. You will
be responsible to create a small plate. Your family’s signature dish will be partially prepared on stage in
front of the audience with the judges and a master of ceremonies helping keep the interest level high
while you cook and explain your recipe and passion for cooking. The 3 judges, who are Craig Chapman,
Melissa Talmage and one other, will taste and comment on your food. They will decide the Judges’
Choice winner of the family story and recipe in fall, 2016 edition of RFRK’s book-a-zine.
Before the competition, you (with help from the members of the Community House Kitchen Guild, if
needed) will prepare a taste of your recipe. The Community House will sell out at over 225 people. The
audience will taste these one bite portions and those along with the stage presentation will help them
decide who will win the People’s Choice by giving money for you during intermission. This combined
with the money you raise before the event will determine the People’s Choice winner of the RFRK TV
cooking segment. History has shown that most of the money will have to have been raised before the
event, but the excitement builds in the audience as they cast their vote with their money at
intermission. During intermission you will be mingling with the audience as they have drinks and add
money to your voting box.
After intermission, all contestants will go back on stage and the People’s Choice winner will be awarded
the TV segment and the Judges’ Choice will be awarded the book-a-zine segment.
