INVITATION
The Symposium on Functional Biodiversity and Ecophysiology of animals will
be organized by the Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi
(U.P.) from February, 21-23, 2009. The members of the Organizing Committee take
pleasure in inviting you to participate in this symposium. The symposium would
cover wide ranging topics on recent advances in biodiversity and ecophysiology of
animals.
Biological diversity comprises diversity of species and habitats as well as the
genetic diversity within the individual species of fauna and flora. All these
components are closely interconnected and interact with each other. Biodiversity has
become one of the most crucial, challenging and exciting areas of modern biology,
partly because of its rapid decline and partly because it embraces all levels of
organization from the molecular unit to the individual organisms, up to the levels of
population, community, ecosystem, landscape and biosphere.
The emphasis today is on understanding and managing biodiversity in natural
habitats as well as those under strong anthropogenic pressures. It is widely recognized
that trophic cascades in both terrestrial and aquatic systems result from a variety of
processes. This necessitates the study of the behaviour, ecology, biological rhythms,
and ecophysiology of ecologically important animals and biotic and abiotic stresses in
the ecosystems and their management. This requires the interactions of scientists from
diverse inter-related disciplines and therefore, the present symposium aims to provide
a common platform in this direction.
VENUE
Varanasi, also known as Benaras (the oldest living city in the world), is located
on the banks of the river Ganga. It has been a centre of learning and civilization for over
2000 years. Benaras is famous for its arc like river frontage, numerous temples, Sarnath
(place where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon), narrow lanes and bazaars of silk and
handicrafts. It is well connected by air and trains.
Banaras Hindu University, founded by a great visionary and academician, Pt.
Madan Mohan Malviya in 1916, is the largest in Asia. It has three Institutes, 14 Faculties
and in all 134 Departments. The Zoology Department of Banaras Hindu University has
been main centre of higher studies & research in India. During the month of February,
Varanasi enjoys a pleasant weather (with max. temperature of about 28°C) and is a
good season for academic activities and traveling in North India.
SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME
The following areas are identified for the symposium
Biodiversity richness (agricultural, forest and aquatic) sustainability and
management
Abiotic stresses of ecosystem (pollution, soil degradation etc.) and their
management
Biotic stresses of ecosystem (insect pests, mites, parasites etc.) and their
management
Behavioural ecology, social behaviour and plant-insect interactions
Biological rhythms
Aquaculture
Ecophysiology of insect pests and beneficial insects
Toxicology: Nanotoxicology and nano drug delivery
