2015 Charter
Food Loss and Waste Working Group
Working group discussions are opportunities to engage in cross learning and to explore
opportunities for project collaborations. These are 90-minute long, content-rich sessions that
require participants to be in conditions that allow them to actively participate and contribute to
the conversation. As much as possible, members should join via the Zoom platform, taking
advantage of the video functionally which greatly enhances the participation experience.
Members should avoid joining while on the road or with limited phone or internet connectivity as
this could limit the benefit of their participation.
4. Proposed Work Plan
Learning
Through case studies and guest speaker presentations, the group will cover learning across the
food loss and waste landscape, with a particular focus on farm-level losses, including storage of
wet and dry foods. Technical solutions as well as issues of adoption and training will be
discussed. Learning will take place through:
1. Monthly case study presentations by PIA members and guest organizations, to enable the
group to harvest collective knowledge while providing problem-solving support to each
participating organization. Case studies from within the PIA group will be prioritized and
supplemented by cases from outside organizations with relevant cases and learning
opportunities.
2. Expert participants: When members’ case studies or calls for action are presented, experts
with related expertise will be invited to join the working group meeting to contribute to the
discussion. Experts may come from MIT, its network and beyond, bringing research content
and perspective to frame or complement the case studies.
The output of each working group session will be synthesized meeting notes, summarizing the
learning and the questions raised during the session and in the online exchange.
Action
1. Call for Action: For interested members, one of the working group’s monthly meetings can
be dedicated to a “Call for Action”. In this session, the PIA member gets the opportunity to
pitch his/her project/need and ask the group for collaboration on well-defined food loss
initiatives. A discussion forum will be opened on the Basecamp online platform for this
purpose, for each Call for Action. Members can pitch collaboration needs, offer general
advice, resources and contacts and those with complementary assets and capabilities can
self-identify for follow up discussions to frame collaborations.
2. R&D projects: Scale-Ups staff may initiate fieldwork projects relating to food storage in order
to apply and further test the group’s learnings. Working group members will have the
opportunity to provide input into project plans and remain updated on its progress; outputs of
the project will be shared and discussed with the working group.
3. Field-based organizations: To foster the success of potential collaborations initiated within
the working group, action-oriented organizations with implementation capabilities in target
markets and/or related topical expertise may be selected and invited to engage with working
