20.1 Technology and
Communication

Electricity
Electricity was developed in 1870.
Electricity grew wildly in the late 1800’s.
Michael Faraday made key discoveries about electricity.
He found that moving a magnet through a wire generated magnetism via
electrically charged wires.
Scientists used Faraday’s discoveries to develop the Dynamo.
Electricity Cont.
The dynamo transformed mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Edison made a bulb that burned for two days.
Electricity had to be transmitted well to be used.
Waterfalls were used to run dynamos across the nation.
Communications
Electrical power spurred growth in other inventions.
In 1870 alexander Graham Bell sent the human voice over long distance.
In 1876 the telephone was patented.
In 1894 Guglielmo Marconi developed a way to send messages through space at
the speed of light.
In 1880 Hertz proved that such waves existed by transmitting and receiving them.
In 1901 the first wireless message was sent across the Atlantic ocean.
The Internal Combustion Engine-Automobile
In the late 1800’s the idea for engines that used a portable fuel supply blew up.
Named for the fact that the combustion of fuel was inside a closed cylinder.
In the old steam engine, combustion took place outside the cylinder.
Important Pioneers included Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz of germany and
Etienne lenoir of france.
1893, Charles and Frank Duryea built first successful gasoline-driven automobile
in united states.
Henry ford produced the first commercially successful automobile.
The Internal Combustion Engine-Airplanes
Since the 1700’s, people used balloons filled with gas lighter than air to float
above the ground.
Beginning in 1800’s, inventors device heavier-than-air machine that would actually
fly.
Wilbur and Orville wright of United states, were the first to succeed in flying a
powered plane in sustained, controlled flight. Took place in Kitty Hawk, North
Carolina, 1903
Wright brother’s achievement was example of a combination of science and
technology.
Wright brother used principles of aerodynamics to succeed.
