ABINGTON WINS SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
Abington High School has been named the winner of the South Shore League Clark Chatterton Sportsmanship
Award for the 2014-2015 school year. Each year the South Shore league recognizes one school as the overall
Sportsmanship winner. Coaches of each varsity sport select the top programs based on sportsmanship using a
rubric at the conclusion of each season. The results from each individual sport are then tallied to declare an
overall winner.
This year Abington High School was the overall sportsmanship winner with 14 of their 17 varsity programs
ranked as one of the top 3 schools in the league at their sport. “The South Shore League places a high value on
sportsmanship, in my opinion the entire league displays excellent sportsmanship from the administrators to
coaches to student athletes. To be recognized with this award, in this league, is truly an accomplishment that
our coaches, student athletes and their families should be proud of. The entire Green Wave Community, from
coaches, parents and student athletes, emphasize the importance of sportsmanship, and this award validates
those efforts.”
Senior three sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball) Nate Riordan explained: “Winning the
sportsmanship award is such an amazing award for Abington High School to win. It shows that we, as athletes,
are always thinking about being good people, even during our athletic events and always value being a good
sport even if we lose.” He continued to note “Sportsmanship is important to me because it shows other schools
and my peers that after a rough game or a tough call I will shake it off and no matter what will give the
opposing players and the referees the respect they deserve. Also I believe that portraying good sportsmanship
can translate into other aspects of life and will help develop a well-rounded person.”
Senior Alexis LaPointe, member of the AHS Soccer and Track teams, spoke to how it is representative of the
overall culture at Abington High School. “It shows that the teams in our school take pride in how we work
together to support each other and how we show respect to the opposing teams.”
Coach Kate Casey (girls’ soccer and lacrosse) shared “Sportsmanship is the greatest attribute that a team can
possess. Winning the sportsmanship award speaks volumes to the positive culture of Abington High School
and its athletic teams.”
