APPLICATION FOR VACANT BOARD POSITION
Each board of education is free to adopt rules and regulations regarding appointing an individual to a vacant school board
position. A board of education has sixty (60) days from the date a seat is declared vacant to fill the seat by appointment. After
sixty (60) days have expired, a board of education is required to call a special election to fill the vacancy.
Any individual appointed to a vacant board position must meet the same requirements needed to file to be a candidate for a
board position. The OSSBA has created a sample “Application” for vacant board positions which your district may use. The
application contains legal requirements which an individual must meet in order to be eligible to be a member of a board of
education.
