Tourism Market Structure COURSE DESCRIPTION The course is an introduction to the tourism phenomena and the travel industry; the students will analyze and understand the main factors related with the tourism phenomena both ways: as an influence on tourism and a consequence of the development of the travel industry. Economy, demography, technology, politics, psychology or natural environment are related with travelling and are topics to look on. The students should also know and understand the different types of companies that act in the industry, the legal framework of the industry and the main circumstances that make people travel nowadays. As a summary, the course is an introduction to the knowledge of the tourism phenomena developing a deep analysis of its resources, companies, factors of influence and clients. CREDITS 6 ECTS CREDITS 6 RELEVANCE WITHIN CURRICULUM The course is an introduction to the tourism and travel industry absolutely needed for the students as the first step to understand this business and approach this area before specializing themselves or choosing professional areas within tourism. GENERAL SKILLS The Skills that will be specially designed to be treated and developed through the different activities of the course are: · · Responsibility: that includes the commitment level of the student with the course and the Studies, attendance, punctuality, delivery of the works and activities, attendance to the extra-academic activities, and global attitude in class. Teamwork: ability to work with your colleagues, compromise level, leading and motivating skills, coordination level with your colleagues, adaptability to different people and situations. The competences will be evaluated by the teacher and shared with the student individually at the end of the course, just as the rest of the grades. SPECIFIC SKILLS The global skills referred will be developed and applied trough practical cases relating them to the tourism and travel industry. SUBJECT CONTENT 1º PART: INTRODUCING THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY 1- Introduction to the tourism phenomenon. 2.- The history of the travel industry: origin and evolution. 3.- International tourism: Facts, figures and institutions. 4.- Tourism and economy. 5.- Tourism and politics: the public administrations role. 2º PART: THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY SECTORS AND COMPANIES 6 – Tourism and transportation. 7 – The hospitality industry. 8 – Tourist services intermediation and commercialization: the travel agencies. 9 – Other leisure and related sectors and companies. 3º PART: THE SPANISH TRAVEL INDUSTRY 10 – The Spanish travel industry: History, evolution and trends. LEARNING ACTIVITIES The main learning activities that will allow students to get to know the needed knowledge and skills for the courses are going to be: - Regular practical and theoretical classes. - Group debates and discussions. - Teamwork projects. - Radio tourism program. - Individual tasks and exercises. - Visits and conferences. Villaviciosa de Odón. 28670 Madrid / uem.es ASSESSMENT The development of this course will take place through the most interactive academic methodologies in order to apply the concepts that the new EEES (Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior) in terms of sharing the learning responsibility between teacher and students, individual follow up of the learning progress and competences and skills development as an objective within the course. For that reason, assessment will have a continuous scope including attending classes, participation. Works and academic practices developed by the students individually in class. Works and academic practices developed by the students in groups in class or as extra-class teamwork.
