The Case For Square Let-down Tanks MorehouseCowles promotes the use of square tanks with round corners for all let-down applications, from lab units for fine-tuning formulas, to 20,000 gallon production tanks. Several major paint manufacturers utilize square tank technology in their let-down applications. The reasons for using square let-down tanks are many. For a given batch size, square tanks have a smaller footprint than a round tank, freeing up valuable floor space. With it’s flat, sloped-to-discharge bottom, complete drainage of product is achieved. Horsepower requirements are greatly reduced, so that an 8,000gallon tank needs only a 30 horsepower motor, freeing up the larger horsepower units for the job for which they were designed, dispersion. Finally, being inverter driven through a gearbox, the optimum speed for any stage of the letdown process is easily obtained. The single biggest advantage of square tanks with round corners is it’s natural baffling effect. With the product flow generated in a square tank, baffles are eliminated; a great advantage as sizing baffles for a round tank can sometimes be a hit-or-miss proposition. The absence of baffles means there are no annoying eddies that trap product and keep it from being fully incorporated in the batch. The lack of baffles also means faster and more thorough cleaning of the tank between batches. For all let-down applications, big or small, square tanks with round corners provide optimum performance and value. MorehouseCowles has the knowledge and experience to design a let-down unit to meet all of the needs of the ever-expanding paint industry at competitive prices.
