PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Australian Rail Track Corporation Ltd (ARTC) engaged SMEC Australia Pty Ltd
for the civil design of the Chilcotts Creek Access Connection Road. At Willow Tree,
NSW, Australia. The access road included two pipe culvert crossings and two
causeways. SMEC investigated the alternative construction methods available and
finally decided on Ecoflex Systems for the four structures. The structures were
designed for overtopping in 1in 100 year flood events. The designs were presented
and ARTC approved the cost effective, sustainable Design using Ecoflex Systems.
By choosing Ecoflex Systems the project saved approximately 21% for these portions
of work, saving the project just over $42,000.00.
The client had particular regards to the unique properties of the Ecoflex
Systems; namely:

Rev 0
•
Cost – Estimated at over 20% direct cost saving which is significant
considering that the Ecoflex headwalls are not a major portion of the
overall works.
•
Environmental – Using Ecoflex systems reduced significantly the GHG
emissions that concrete structures would have produced. The ease of
transition that Ecoflex systems offer for transition from head wall system
to erosion protection systems offer increased environmental erosion
safeguards.
•
Time – There is no curing time requirements using Ecoflex, there was
also a requirement to maintain access for other works during construction.
The design and construction program ensured this outcome.
•
Durability – Ecoflex systems are guaranteed for 50 years reflecting the
hard wearing nature of Ecoflex materials.
•
Sustainability – By using Ecoflex ARTC and SMEC have demonstrated
their commitment to use recycled products and reducing the demand on
raw materials.
