Thomas at 25th Aachener Kolloquium – October 10th to 12th, 2016 – booth 14
More performance – less CO2
Reducing pollutants and CO2 arising from road and passenger transport has
become increasingly important over the years and is now a ubiquitous subject
across industry media and in TV adverts for new vehicles. Thomas focuses on
“More performance – less CO2” at its booth at 25. Aachener Kolloquium.
Herdorf/Aachen, 10th October 2016 – There are many different vehicle
components, systems and processes involved in minimizing exhaust and CO2
emissions, one of which is selective catalytic reduction (SCR). To date, the SCR
process has been applied within the exhaust system of diesel vehicles (trucks,
buses, cars, agricultural machinery, construction vehicles, etc.). AdBlue® (an
aqueous urea solution) is added to exhaust gases and releases ammonia when
heated. This happens before the exhaust gases pass through a catalytic
converter. The solution is injected via either an injection valve or a nozzle. The
resulting chemical reaction transforms nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen
and water. Thomas is one of the market leaders in metering pumps that supply
fluids via an injection valve or a passive nozzle.
Driving development rather than following
In view of the above trend, Thomas has long been developing the next
generation of pumps for AdBlue®. These are known as inline metering pumps.
“Developments of our materials are so far advanced that we are able to apply
the proven system from the fuel sector (metering pumps for engineindependent heating, for example) to AdBlue® too, even though the solution is
much more aggressive than conventional fuel. It should also be noted that
AdBlue® freezes at around below minus 11°C due to its water content. We took
this factor into account during development too, our pumps for these range of
applications are freeze resistant,” says Markus Hillig, Thomas’s sales manager
for products in the field of exhaust aftertreatment.

Apart from exhaust aftertreatment also engine and transmission management
contribute to less exhaust and CO2 emissions. Therefore Thomas presents at the
Aachener Kolloquium also products from the engine and transmission
management, which play a crucial role here.
When developing new applications, Thomas benefits from its own skills as an
innovator. This has assured the company’s market-leading position over the past
25 years. It also has extensive experience of designing customer-specific
applications.
Thomas considers itself to be more than simply a provider of individual
components – it supplies systems. “We know our customers’ systems (almost)
as well as they do themselves,” explains Hillig. “That is our strength. Only by
understanding a system from the inside out can you design the components for
it as we do. Because of this, our SCR pumps are multifunctional units capable of
combining several functions in a single component – dry aspiration, delivery,
boosting pressure, metering, shut-off and heat. All with just one electrical
connection. In this way, Thomas helps customers to design their systems in a
much simplified manner, manage fewer components, have fewer interfaces to
work on, and can build smaller and lighter. We see ourselves as a partner to our
customers and we maintain this partnership across many generations of the
product,” states Hillig.
