Workshop Overview Points to Note: By the end of the workshop, delegates will be able to: 1 A one-page workshop overview has been included. It is intended to provide, at a glance, the order in which outcomes may be reached, the key points that should be raised and timings. 2 The workshop provides you with a number of methods of delivery. You will consequently be able to deliver a workshop that is relevant to the audience you are working with. It is your choice which combination of methods you use, for example, to meet the workshop outcomes. 4 Remember: It is important that you achieve the outcomes of this workshop. Time 20 minutes Outcome Content Overview Understand how to connect participants with the session Delegates will plan how to introduce the outcomes of the session to a group of participants Delivery Ideas and Notes Ask delegates to consider the session they had put together in the introduction and to work in pairs to develop an introduction for the session and success criteria for the end of the session. Resources How to Deliver Engaging Sessions resource Remind the delegates that the outcomes should not simply be based on the sporting activity of the session. For example, one outcome might be: ’Plan a social event for the end of the series of sessions’. Be able to set appropriate success criteria for an activity Delegates will define the success criteria for the session If possible, ask delegates to work with those from a similar sport or sporting background. The task is for each group to describe how they can help participants understand what success at the end of the session will look like. For example: ‘If this session works well for you, we expect you to have worked out the distance from which you can shoot three out of five shots, and the area of the circle from which you have the most success.’ sports coach UK Workshop – Tutor Notes 4 How to Deliver Engaging Sessions: Practical Session Quickly run through the STEP framework and then ask delegates to plan and run part of their bigger session where they clearly state: sports coach UK Workshop – Tutor Notes the success ratio for building confidence how they would adapt the activity using STEP how they would help participants use STEP for themselves. 5 How to Deliver Engaging Sessions: Practical Session Section Three: Competence and Creativity (25 minutes) Delegates will: explore the necessity and feasibility of having flexible start times be able to introduce flexibility into sessions explore the need for different types of sessions explore how to run a session where the emphasis is on health and fitness. Time Outcome Content Overview 25 minutes Explore how to introduce flexibility into a session Delegates will plan the first 15 minutes of a session where participants may arrive at different times In small groups, ask delegates to discuss how to run the first 15 minutes of a session so that, as participants arrive, they are occupied purposefully, but the main session starts when all participants are there. Explore how to run a session where the emphasis is on health and fitness Delegates will identify the main opportunities for developing health and fitness within their sport and then deliver the session focusing on maintaining a certain activity level In pairs, plan the activity and then, in groups of eight, one person delivers the activity and the others take part. Explore creativity in sessions sports coach UK Workshop – Tutor Notes Delivery Ideas and Notes Resources Workshop resource Leave plenty of time at the end for group discussion and comparison of different ideas, and ask the group to think of ideas for introducing creativity into the session. 6 How to Deliver Engaging Sessions: Practical Session Section Four: Character, and Caring and Compassion (20 minutes) Delegates will: learn about the benefits of fair play be able to run an activity with the emphasis on fair play. Time Outcome Content Overview Delivery Ideas and Notes 20 minutes Learn how to run an activity with the emphasis on fair play Examine the start and end of the activity and what should be said and done to ensure participants understand the emphasis on fair play and the codes of behaviour/practice within the activity In small groups, delegates should discuss the important etiquette within their sport and how this could be introduced and emphasised appropriately. Run an activity emphasising the fair play aspects In pairs, plan an activity with an emphasis on how fair play would make the activity more successful. Resources Workshop resource In small groups, one person runs the activity and the others take part in it. Time Outcome Content Overview 10 minutes Decide which method of planning for the ‘C’ system may work for them Delegates look at planning sheets and decide which ones work for them, or which ones they could adapt for their own use In pairs, ask delegates to work together to see how the activities they have seen and delivered could be included on the planning sheet. Summarise for themselves by discussing the most relevant parts of the ‘C’ system Delegates arrange their own summary by stating which parts of the ‘C’ system have most relevance to them and why Ask delegates to work in small groups to summarise the use of the ‘C’ system.
