Title
Demonstrate understanding of plant structure, functions and
processes
Level

Purpose
This unit standard is for people working in a horticulture
context.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate
understanding of plant structures and their functions; plant
tissue structures and their importance for plant growth; the
importance of plant processes for plant growth and/or
development; and the effects of environmental factors on plant
processes.

Explanatory notes
In the context of this unit standard, understanding means that there should be evidence of
a learner’s thorough comprehension of a topic. A learner with a good understanding of a
topic should have applied, or should be able to apply what they have learnt to a workplace
situation and will be able to alter their practices to the different contexts they are applying
their learning to. Assessors should be confident that the learner’s understanding is
embedded in their practices and behaviour.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Demonstrate understanding of plant structures and their functions.
Range
plant structures – cells, roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Describe the structure and functions of plant structures in terms of their
importance for plant growth or reproduction.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate understanding of plant tissue structures and their importance for plant
growth.

Evidence requirements
2.1
Describe plant tissue types in terms of their importance to plant growth.
plant tissue types – vascular system, cambium tissue, meristem
tissue, epidermal tissue, storage tissue.
Range
2.2
Identify the age of particular shoots in terms of the internal and external plant
signs.
Outcome 3
Demonstrate understanding of the importance of plant processes for plant growth and/or
development.
Range
plant processes – photosynthesis, respiration, water uptake and transpiration,
nutrient uptake, pollination, fertilisation, seed and fruit formation.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Describe plant processes in terms of their importance for optimum plant growth
and/or development.
Outcome 4
Demonstrate understanding of the effects of environmental factors on plant processes.
Range
environmental factors - light, temperature, water, wind, oxygen, and carbon
dioxide;
plant processes – photosynthesis, respiration, water uptake and transpiration,
nutrient uptake, pollination, fertilisation, seed and fruit formation.
Evidence requirements
4.1
Describe environmental factors in terms of their effect on plant processes

Please note
Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies
to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The
CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing
to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors
and assessors, and special resource requirements.
