DUCKS
Justin Vajler made his first for the season and took
his career tally to 26. Jeremy Brewer got his 2nd
duck for the season but with 1 of those in the
under 16 side so that doesn’t count, he is too
young for a record of any note but hang around
long enough young fella and you will get there.
Shayne Vallance grabbed his 2nd quacka this season
and took his tally to 17 and could be a big mover in
the coming years.

FIRSTS
Last Week Vs Morwell
A wet start to the day meant a delay in the start of
the match, however upon taking the field Evo and
George were straight into it with a wicket apiece to
remove both openers. Baghdadis nabbed one and
so did Bloomy and Alfie with the bowlers on a roll
and Morwell floundering at 5/108. Worse was still
to come and Morwell closed out the day on 8/124.
It didn't take long to wrap up their innings on day
two, with Wiz claiming his third for the price of just
8 runs while Hornswoggle picked up the other to
finish with 2/27 in a dominant display in the field.
In reply it seemed the umpires were keen to make
a game of it with some dubious decisions, Sidsy
was probably a little unlucky to be given out by an
umpire who wasn't actually watching the stumping
attempt, before considering he hadn't actually left
his crease. Taddy though can have no complaints
after middling the ball straight to the keeper,
although he wasn't exactly quiet about it on the
way off. Sids and Kenno both departed before we'd
reached 30 and Wellsy followed not long after. The
lower order could be forgiven for thinking that with
Aphale and Bloomfield at the crease that the game
was effectively over, but both were dismissed
cheaply to leave us at 6/79 and in serious trouble

with only Duncs, Baghdadis and Evo left in the
sheds. However a true Irishman and his mate
Patrick stood up on Saint Patrick's Day with George
and the Wiz steering us safely past the target and
into the final, Hornswoggle with a fine 43 not out
while Black Jesus contributed a swift 20. With
Morwell conceding defeat after their total was
passed, we were through to face the old foe in the
final.
This Week (Grand Final) Vs Moe
They don't come much bigger than this. At face
value this is a contest with so much at stake. Last
year's finalists duke it out once again for the top
prize. But even within the contest there are so
many individual battles. Moe's brazen confidence
is well known and after defeating us earlier in the
year, defending a minuscule total and minus key
bowlers Sam Price and Tassie Johnson, it's hard to
argue. But if they expect another repeat then
they're in for a shock. Alfie has been dismissed
cheaply in the last two grand finals and will be
more than eager to stamp his mark on the
competition with a big hundred in the final.
Hornswoggle will be looking to go out with a bang
after deciding to stick around for one last game.
The old guard of Bloomy, Wellsy and Kenno know
the history of these contests and always lift when
push comes to shove. Evo and Wiz have been
taking bags of wickets all year. Our side is a very
good side. More than good enough to beat Moe.
But games of cricket are not won on paper and this
is all just bluster until we go out there and do it.
With Moe gunning for eight consecutive
premierships, what better motivation than to
knock such an arrogant side from their pedestal?
Player Profiles
Daniel Siddle - "Sidsy"
Age: 26
Runs: 242 @ 22.00
A supremely talented opening batsman, Sids has all
the shots and does not lack confidence in his own
ability. Started the year well but recently has had a
string of low scores, but this guy lifts when the
pressure is on so expect a big knock from him.
Something of a joker in the field, Sidsy has a
genuine love of the game and never lets the team
down.
Ian Kennedy - "Kenno, Bloggs"
Age: 37
Runs: 231 @ 23.10
Kenno has been opening the batting a long time
and knows pretty much all there is to know about
it. A lefty with an impressive range of shots,
particularly on the leg side and behind square,
Kenno can hit the ball very hard and very far, and
thrives on dominating opposition bowlers from the
get-go. Also a safe pair of hands in the cordon.
Kris Wells - "Wellsy, Bush Pig"
Age: 38
Runs: 410 @ 45.56
Wickets: 2 @ 15.50
Wellsy is one of the club's most stylish and elegant
batsmen and when in full flight nothing can stop
him flaying the bowlers at will. When he's not
injured he bowls sharply and accurately and builds
pressure on the batsman.
A seasoned campaigner, Wellsy has been and done
it all and his experience is a huge bonus when
combined with his considerable talent.
Kaushik Aphale - "Alfie, Alfonso"
Age: 34
Runs: 706 @ 88.25
Wickets: 14 @ 13.29
Alfie boasts a very impressive stats card however
he knows that counts for nothing having been
cheaply dismissed in the last two finals. This guy is
one of the best bats to have ever graced the league
and his double-century against Morwell was
absolutely outstanding. His off-spinners have
nabbed him plenty of wickets and he is hard to get
away in a perfect support role. Also an excellent
slip fielder with 12 catches.
Anthony Bloomfield - "Bloomy, Mopsy, Great One"
Age: 40
Runs: 268 @ 33.50
Wickets: 19 @ 10.58
Bloomy is one of Latrobe's greatest legends and
with such a stellar record it's not hard to see why.
Brilliant with both bat and ball, he can take the
game away from you in either discipline although
it's well-known he prefers to bowl to the kiddies. A
sharp gully fieldsman and a keen observer of verbal
LATROBE GLOBE
23 March 2013 – Grand Final Edition
tactics, Bloomy is a keen competitor and hates
losing with a passion.
George Robert McKinley - "Hornswoggle, Robert
the Hobbit"
Age: 19
Runs: 376 @ 47.00
Wickets: 18 @ 16.28
Rob McKinley has been an excellent addition to the
A Grade side this year with his fast, accurate
bowling and free flowing batting making him a true
two-in-one player. His ability to win a match with
either bat or ball has been a huge boost to the side,
and his involvement with our Under 16's side has
been fantastic. Rob will be looking to finish his last
match for Latrobe with a winners medal and you
wouldn't bet against a guy with his determination.
Justin Vajler - "Taddy, Butterfingers"
Age: 38
Runs: 191 @ 27.29
Taddy hasn't had a great year with the bat due to
limited opportunities however the great thing
about finals, it doesn't matter what sort of year
you've had. Taddy is also an experienced veteran
and while he hasn't made too many runs, with the
top-order we've had he hasn't needed to. He's a
fighter and you couldn't ask for anyone better
coming in at 7 with the game on the line. Has had a
propensity to drop sodas this year however the
problem appears to have been recently corrected.
Patrick Farrant - "The Wiz, Black Jesus"
Age: 35
Runs: 197 @ 19.70
Wickets: 28 @ 13.79
The Wiz (or Black Jesus as he now calls himself) has
been a big boost for the firsts, and not just for his
antics. With his ripping legspinners and endless
variations such as the mysterious 'dolphin,' Wiz has
been bamboozling batsmen all year. His batting is
also dependable and is more than capable of
scoring heavily or rebuilding in a crisis. A fine
cricketing talent and a great addition to the team.
Adam Duncan - "Duncs"
Age: 33
Runs: 54 @ 54.00
Dismissals: 15 catches, 6 stumpings
The A Grade skipper and 'keeper, Duncs is a fine
stumper and has had no trouble keeping to the
awkward and unpredictable Wiz and shown his
class with 6 stumpings. Duncs is a fighter with the
bat and his determination has got him further than
ability, and has a knack of grinding out tough runs.
The heartbeat of the side, Duncs will be keen to
motivate the side to end Moe's seven year
monopoly on the CGCA crown.
Jamie Brierley - "Baghdadis, JB, Tex"
Age: 22
Wickets: 16 @ 10.94
A cricketer who is perhaps best known for his
antics than his performances, Baghdadis' temper
detracts from his ability in the field, sharp and
deadly, and his knack of building up pressure with
the ball and tempting the batsman into a mistake
or allowing another bowler to attack from the
other end. His batting is also not the worst and can
play some aggressive shots.
Brendan Evans - "Evo, No-Bang, Sheldon"
Age: 22
Wickets: 26 @ 11.38
Evo has followed on from his success of last year
with plenty more wickets. His sharp pace and
movement, as well as his tight line and length have
made it tough for batsmen not only to score
against but also to survive. Consistently delivering
early breakthroughs as well as nearly always
claiming the oppositions key bats, Evo and how the
opposition play him will a be key factor in keeping
Moe to a low total.
Will Kennedy – 12th man “Figjam, Wlibur”
Age 13
Runs: 245 @ 35
Wickets: 16 @ 14.25
Son of club stalwart Will is not far off becoming
“the man” and will dominate in the years to come.
Has a safe set of hands and no fear so when given
the chance to take the field will give 100% and
won’t let anyone down with his enthusiasm and

attack on the ball whether that be to stop it or
catch it at all costs. He will be better for the
experience in the years to come.
SATURDAY NIGHT MEALS
This Saturday night we hope to be celebrating a
couple of premierships with Steak, Chips and Salad

and Salad for just $10. Make sure you get

heaps.
SECONDS
Last Week Vs St Vincents
After a rain-affected draw against Moe, St
Vincent's were through to face us on Yallourn
North's turf. Del won the toss and chose to bat, a
move which looked to be sound until Matt Brewer
again wasted a start, selfishly throwing his wicket
away and we slumped to 4/64. From there the
innings was rebuilt expertly by Aaron Farley (27)
and Tim Cranwell (34) in a 59 run partnership.
Giggles hit them well for his 21 while Rusty (19)
and Del (10) also gave them a whack at the end of
the innings to finish on 8/188. Del predicted that
they would need 200+ however set about ruining
his own credibility from the first ball, pinning Justin
Blair with an in swinging full ball on the stumps and
generally wrecked the Saints innings with 5/7, of
which three were wides. Only one batsman passed
double figures in a dominant bowling display that
saw Ash (2/29) and Rowdy (2/13) nab two wickets
each while Trent chipped in with 1/4 to skittle the
Vinnies for 56 in just over 20 overs, a crushing
victory that sent us through to the final against
Mirboo North.
This Week (Grand Final) Vs Mirboo North
This final could be a close-run affair with each side
claiming a victory once during the course of the
season. Mirboo North are of course a batting side
and we will need a large score to beat them. To do
this, a big individual score is required. Tintin and
Zomes have been doing the hard yards all year and
it's time for Rat-Boy to show off the skills that saw
him début in A Grade at the age of 16. His
tendency to waste valuable starts and cost his
team large totals will see Del sporting a Homer
Simpson-style haircut if he remains captain of the
side much longer, and Matt cannot afford to be
throwing away starts every time he walks to the
crease. Del and Ash will need to make early
breakthroughs with the ball, with Rusty and Tintin
in support who will need to keep it tight and let the
bowlers attack from the other end. Rowdy and
Trent are more than capable of that however both
have a tendency to leak runs and will appreciate
someone tying up and reducing the pressure.
This side lost one game all year and have to be
considered favourites for the flag, but again that
means nothing on the day. Everyone has to turn up
and do their job, and if they do that then the flag
should be ours.
Player Profiles
Michael Zomer - "Zomes"
Age: 43
Runs: 461 @ 41.91
Dismissals: 12 catches, 1 stumping
Zomes is a fine opening batsman and relishes
rotating the strike, taking the game away from the
opposition ball by ball. With the gloves his keeping
is excellent, taking tough chances and almost never
letting through byes. He is the perfect counterpart
to Rat-Boy at the top of the order.
LATROBE GLOBE
23 March 2013 – Grand Final Edition
Matt Brewer - "Rat-Boy"
Age: 17
Runs: 336 @ 21
Rat-Boy is one of the side's most technically correct
batsmen, scoring fast and freely when in full-flight.
However his habit of wasting starts and some sort
of mental handicap that leaves him completely
useless in the field are holding him back as a
cricketer. Needs to get hungry and stop being
satisfied with quick fire 30s and 40s and learn to
bat for the team.
Mark Lawrence - "Wilfred, Tintin"
Age: 23
Runs: 339 @ 26.08
Wickets: 23 @ 10.57
Tintin this year has been as close as you can get to
the perfect all-round cricketer. Every time he steps
onto the field he takes wickets, scores runs and
swallows catches. A captain's dream and a two-inone player, Tintin has also taken 10 catches this
year and has made the game look easy. A big game
player, expect a big contribution from him.
Aaron Farley - "Az"
Age: 38
Runs: 285 @ 23.75
Wickets: 9 @ 12.22
Aaron has plenty of all-round ability but hasn't
bowled for a while. However if the captain is short
on options he could do worse than throw the ball
toy his bloke.
With the bat Aaron went some way to exorcising
his turf-wicket demons last week, and if he plays
himself in this week the opposition could find
themselves chasing a big total.
Jeremy Brewer - "Rowdy, Jesse"
Age: 16
Runs: 270 @ 14.1
Wickets: 26 @ 17.81
Under 16 Captain. An a grade début at 14. Played
junior country week and GCL Under 16's. And
Rowdy will be hoping to add 'B Grade Premiers
2012/13 to that list. An immensely talented
cricketer, Rowdy can bat and bowl excellently, and
his only flaw is that sometimes his emotions get
the better of him during the game and tends to
affect his performance. Nearly got the thirds over
the line in last year's final and will be looking to go
one better this year.
Tim Cranwell – “TC, Gatt”
Age: 44
Runs: 354 @ 22.13
Is the current leading scorer in the clubs history
and has a knack of digging in when the team needs
him most. Could well be the last chance for a
premiership so will be determined to take a couple
of the young fella’s along for the ride. Can be
counted on and will make sure that he has an
influence on the game.
Brad Aitken – “Giggles”
Age: 16
Runs: 571 @ 28.55
Wickets: 16 @ 16.38
Brad is a star in the making, having dominated
juniors since he started at the club. Has now
progressed to be one of the top bats in the seconds
and will slot into the firsts in the next couple of
years. Can bowl medium pace but is unlikely to be
used today, needs to put in some work on his
fielding but has all the qualities of a player of the
future. Today could be the day when the boy
becomes a man.
Glen Steele – “Steeley”
Age: 44
Runs: 237 @ 21.55
Wickets: 33@ 9.0
Steeley has once again been a stand out performer
and will be a key player in the outcome of this
game with his gentle mediums that rarely miss the
target. Is a useful low to middle order batsman
who hits it a long way and is sure to figure in a
partnership if the situation requires it.
Ash Halkett – “Ashish”
Age: 26
Runs: 94 @ 11.75
Wickets: 9 @ 31.00
Ash is a much better player than this season’s
statistics indicate. Came of a stellar season last
year where he was selected in the CGCA first grade
team of the year. Always gives 100% with his left
LATROBE GLOBE
23 March 2013 – Grand Final Edition
arm hostile deliveries and has the ability to turn a
game with the bat especially if the opposition drop
a little short and let him hit square of the wicket.
Will have a major influence on the outcome of this
game and expect a big showing from him with the
ball in particular.
Anthony De Leonardis – “Del”
Age: 25
Runs: 168 @ 21.00
Wickets: 43 @ 12.28
The seconds skipper has had an amazing year that
saw him take out the CGCA seconds bowling
aggregate. Fresh from taking 5/7 in the semi he will
lead by example and make sure that the strong
Mirboo North bats are kept under plenty of
pressure. Is a hard hitting lower order bat who will
smack back over their head if it’s full and sure to
add quick valuable runs at the end if the situation
presents.
Trent Roberts – “Trent”
Age: 16
Wickets: 26 @ 14.12
It’s been a break out year for the young spinner
who continually throws it up in the knowledge that
the bats will came at him and more often than not
they have missed. Has come from the thirds all the
way through to the firsts before finally settling into
the seconds as the number 1 spinner in the side. If
he has a weakness then it is that he doesn’t offer a
lot with the bat and really needs to become the
best slipper in the club to take the step into the
firsts next season. This is sure to be a great
experience for the youngster who will as usual pull
his weight with a wicket or 2.
Mitch Cowell – 12th man “Ever Ready”
Age: 23
Wickets: 11 @ 18.45
Was having a great start to the season and had
many of the firsts bats in heaps of trouble before
being plagued by injury at a time which really cost
him the opportunity to be in the starting 11. Is
handy in the field although can tend to try and get
rid of the ball before having total control such is his
enthusiasm. Will bounce back next year once he
gets his body right.
Latrobe City have been a great supporter for many
years and over the last couple of years we have
seen some great improvements to the Maryvale
Reserve after our local council approved funding to
get the projects under way. Not to mention the
efforts of the ground staff who always do their best
to have the surface in the best possible shape for
all games. Hopefully in the coming years we will
work even closer with Latrobe City on the
development of the Master Plan for the entire
reserve which we anticipate will deliver some
major improvements to the entire area and will tie
in to the Heritage Boulevard housing development.
THIRDS
Last Week Vs St Vincents
Losing the toss to Vinnies, it was slow going early
on with the bowlers struggling in the wet
conditions. The first wicket fell to some great
fielding by Jamie Coltman and after that the Saints
lost wickets steadily as Fish found the perfect line
and length. Daws bowled a majestic but fruitless
spell at the other end, beating the stumps often
and the bat more often, while Jonno took all the
wickets to finish with 4/24 from his ten. Groves
and Nic then polished off the tail with Groves (3/6)
doing most of the damage before another run-out
from The Colt Man saw Vinnies shot out for 77.
In reply Burra wasted no time and made sure the
game was over before afternoon tea was
scheduled to be taken with a helter-skelter
unbeaten 59 that ended the innings in 10.2 overs.
This also saw a 69 run opening partnership of
which Moons contributed just 6. Shayne Vallance
lasted two balls before failing to use his bat instead
of his pads and Groves came in to slap 8 not out off
three balls and finish the game by ten to three, a
crushing win.
LATROBE GLOBE
23 March 2013 – Grand Final Edition
This Week (Grand Final) Vs Moe
A grand final rematch with last season's one run
victors will have the players who tasted defeat in
that match raring to go. Last time out with Moe
batting first we had them on the ropes at 8/90-odd
and let them get away to 140, and cost us the
game. This time there can be no let up and the
bowlers will look to kill the game off as early as
possible. Jonno and Daws are both second gradeclass bowlers and are too good for this division,
expect the opposition to struggle to score off these
two. Groves has been amongst the wickets lately
with 8 in his last two matches but he can bat too
and Nic can hold up an end and keep things tight.
With the bat we all know how destructive Burra
can be but should he fall early Moons will need to
accelerate his scoring rate, Shayne and Jamie can
both hit the ball a long way as can Zac and LVD.
This is arguably a better side than last season's
runner's up and will be looking to go one better
this time in what would be the sweetest of
victories.
Player Profiles
Peter Mooney – “Moons, Great Wall”
Age: 45
Runs: 304 @ 30.4
Moons has held the batting together in many
innings and always puts a high value on his wicket.
Is a key player in the outcome of the result even
though he is not expected to run too many two’s or
three’s. Is a great foil for the skipper and is sure to
play a big role in the outcome. Has a safe set of
hands when fielding at first or second slip or both
and can donkey drop some spinners if the game
needs a wicket.
Dean Burridge – “Burra”
Age: 43
Runs: 588 @ 65.33
Was the star bat of the thirds competition and is a
devastating hitter of the ball when on song which
has been nearly every time he has strode to the
crease this season. Leads by example and will get
us off to a flyer if he is still there at the 10 over
mark. For an old fella he still moves well in the field
and rarely drops a chance. The skipper is the key to
the result.
Steve Grover – “Groves”
Age: 49
Runs: 421 @ 42.10
Wickets: 8 @ 16.38
Has been moving like a 50 year old for about the
last 10 years and is only a couple of weeks off
actually getting there. Fresh from a win in the third
grade player of the year award and is once again
another key play maker who will have a hand in the
result of this game. Was devastated when playing
with a torn hamstring in last year’s final and will be
out for redemption. Has been bowling of late and if
the umpires haven’t put the bell in it this week
could once again grab a few cheap wickets and
clean up the kids at the end.
Jamie Coltman – “JC, Colt Man”
Age: 31
Runs: 127 @ 14.11
Wickets: 6 @ 9.17
Jamie has had a year that he would rather forget
but is a class above this grade and no doubt will
prove that this weekend. Clean hitter of the ball
who just needs to smack a few when they are full
and he will be on. Has the pedigree to run through
any batting order and will only bowl if things are a
struggle. It is without doubt that he is the best
fielder amongst this group, moves well to the ball
rarely misses it and has a dead eye are which was
formed when throwing spears as a youngster.
Could well be the winner of the medal.
Shayne Vallance – “Hollywood”
Age: 23
Runs: 303 @ 27.55
Hollywood has had a great year with the bat and
with continued improvement will push for a game
up a grade next season. Is a hard hitter of the ball
when he gets in, and is sure to bounce back after
getting a blob last week in the semi. Unlikely to get
a bowl but will not die wondering as he is sure to
be stretching up just in case the skipper wants
someone who is fresh and ready to go.
LATROBE GLOBE
23 March 2013 – Grand Final Edition
Luke Vandyke – “LVD”
Age: 19
Runs: 138 @ 19.71
Wickets: 16 @ 12.50
Luke has returned to the club after a year away and
has slotted in well with both bat and ball. Bowls at
a reasonable medium pace even though has the
tendency to drop a bit short thinking that he is DK.
Has had some good performances with the bat and
gives it a good whack in the lower order. If the
game needs it you would back him to win it off his
own bat without fear.
Zac Smith – “Zac”
Age: 16
Runs: 111 @ 15.86
Dismissals: 4 Catches
A great young kid who continues to improve. There
are times when you wish he would catch the ball in
his mouth to keep him quiet for a couple of
minutes. Has been off again on again keeper this
year but will have the job this weekend. Zac will hit
up a storm if given the chance so watch for a few
late runs a classic catch or two.
Nic Brewer – “Nicky Brew”
Age: 20
Runs: 97 @ 24.25
Wickets: 33 @ 10.36
Nic has come a long way from the days when he
couldn’t hit the pitch or hit a stationery ball into a
net. Has been great with the ball all season and
never fails to get amongst the wickets. Is handy in
the middle of the order and if we lose early wickets
he has the ability to resurrect the innings. Doubt
there is a player who deserves a flag more than this
fella considering how hard he has worked on his
game in the past 5 or 6 seasons.
Michael Smith – “Stiffy, Chips”
Age: 23
Runs: 27 @ 9
Wickets: 4 @ 12.50
Former winner of the fielding award and if nothing
else he will entertain the crowd. Can bowl when
given the chance although looking at the attack is
unlikely to be called into the action this week. Will
not give his wicket up easily so expect him to
nudge them around and make a contribution with
the bat if required.
Jon Hayes – “Jono”
Age: 23
Batting: Can’t
Wickets: 17 @ 15.06
Could well be the only player to ever go a whole
year not missing a game but failing to trouble the
scorers. Has been a class act with the ball and is
above this level so he is sure to make a massive
contribution with his unorthodox yet effective
action. Is coming off a fine semi-final where he was
just too fast for the opposition, it will be a bit
tougher this week but is the man for the job.
Paul Dawson – “Daws”
Age: 27
Batting: Same as Jono
Wickets: 30 @ 13.43
Daws has proven time and again that he is too
smart for most playing in the thirds. Vary rarely
bowls a bad ball which gives him every chance of
making a big contribution week in week out. Didn’t
fire a shot in the semi but we won’t see him put in
2 below par games in a row. Is pretty good in the
field as long as the ball doesn’t come to him.
John Scurlock – 12th man “Scurlo”
Age: 31
Runs: 121 @ 15.13
Wickets: 7 @ 23.57
John has had a mixed season, starting with a bang
and pushing his name up for selection in the
seconds. Was a little starved of opportunities
throughout the middle of the season which has
resulted in him being the sub fielder this week
when required. No doubt there are a couple of
blokes in this side that could benefit from Scurlo
getting a run throughout the game.
COMING EVENTS
Presentation Night – There are currently 43
confirmed attendees for this season’s presentation
night to be held at the club rooms on Saturday 13th
April. The cost of the night is just $30 which
includes a meal and DJ entertainment. If you are
yet to notify Mero if you will be around please let

purposes.
Jim’s Mowing are in their first year as a Silver
sponsor of the Latrobe Cricket Club. While their
signage has only recently gone up after the
completion of the Grant Street fence you can be
sure that it will be there over the winter months.
So next time the lawns need mowing and you don’t
have the time to get the job done yourself then
give Jim’s Mowing a call as you can be guaranteed
that the job will be completed in a timely and
professional manner.
JOKER POKER
Bert made his way back to the club from his golfing
trip away and jagged the opportunity to take him
the jackpot but could only manage drawing the 3
of hearts. The jackpot for Presentation Night will
start at $425 and will be won on the night with
potentially a couple of opportunities to share in the
winnings.
CLUB GEAR
Last chance for the season to get your hands on
some club merchandise, so if you want to show
your support then see Jamie or Bloomy and grab
yourself a cap for $60, Floppy Hats $18, Training
Shorts $25, Jackets $45, White Playing Shirts $30 or
a club Polo Shirt $35.
THE LAW IS THE LAW
When we win and are celebrating there is no
breaking of the club rules which is also the law and
there is to be no underage player or supporter
consuming alcohol at the club. It is serious offence
that carries an $8000 fine plus a loss of licence
which cannot be risked.
Karls have joined with us this year and the
response to their vouchers has been fantastic. If
you are in the market for some cricket or footy
gear or if you are looking for something a little
trendy then there is no better place around so go
check out their range on the highway in Traralgon.
CONGRATULATIONS
Everything is pointing towards this weekend being
one of great expectation for the club. All of our
players have committed themselves this season
with many numbers on the track and available all
season. As early as round 3 the selectors had to
leave out some players with Trent Roberts being
one of those left out. Trent went on to work his
way through the grades from the thirds where he
picked up a lazy 5 wicket haul before working his
way into the seconds and finally into the firsts.
Trent finished the season with 19 seconds wickets
This week see’s us have 3 sides through to the
grand final but only half the work has been done.
The firsts found it tough to win their semi last week
but this will benefit them and with the memory of
last season’s grand final you can be sure they will
give a good account of themselves. Moe has to be
stopped from winning eight in a row and it is our
turn this season, with Rob committing himself to
the team and club this should lift the team to
greatness. Our last first grade premiership was in
2004/05 when Barney Webber took us to the flag,
we have been runners up the last two years with
last year’s result being a disaster when we lost
both Wellsy and Bloomy to leg injuries before
lunch on day 1. Moe had batted first and finished
on 9/222 after their 100 overs. Evo put in a lion
hearted effort bowling 27 overs to take 4/52, Ash
bowled 21 overs and finished with 1/61, Alfie 22
LATROBE GLOBE
23 March 2013 – Grand Final Edition
overs 1/28 and Nick Celima 10 overs to finish with
1/21. When it was our turn to bat and the wicket
had deteriorated a little and we were bundled out
for a disappointing 92 from 59.4 overs with 2 bats
that couldn’t run. Only 4 batsmen made it into
double figures. We have a new team this year with
Nick Celima, Mark Lawrence and Ash Halkett all
missing from last year’s team. The new additions
include Rob McKinley, Pat Farrant and a more
confident Jamie Brierley. The thirds will remember
their heart wrenching loss by 1 run in last year’s
grand final when beaten by Moe and some will still
be hurting from this result which will make them
more determined to get over the line this year.
Playing on the Trafalgar ground last year Moe
made 139 after 48.4 overs after we had them 7/95.
Paul Dawson was our major wicket taker with 4/28,
Nick Brewer 2/13, Burra 2/24 and Moons 1/13 who
are all in today’s team. In reply we fell that one run
short when we were 6/97, 7/122, 8/130, and
couldn’t get over the line. Last year we needed an
experienced bat to take control and Moons 29,
Burra 25, and Groves 8 but they couldn’t get the
job done, this year added into the side is Jamie
Coltman who could be the ex-factor after he
captained our last second grade premiership team.
The last seconds premiership was 2010/11, the
two’s have won 10 premierships and still in the
side from the last one include Mark Lawrence,
Mick Zomer, Glenn Steele, Ash Halkett, and
Anthony De Leonardis so they have the experience,
added to this is the young talents of Matt and
Jeremy Brewer and Brad Aitken plus new player in
Aaron Farley and the very experienced Tim
Cranwell and hopefully the team will be rewarded
after a wonderful season.

SOME BIG GF PERFORMANCES
The Latrobe Cricket Club has had some big
performances in grand finals and none better than
from one of the best when Kris Wells made a
determined 125 back in 2005 to snuff out any
chance Morwell had. A young Robert Fox blazed a
classic 104 against Yallourn North in 2002. Ian
Kennedy hit up 100 not out in the seconds against
Moe in 2000. The best bowling performance that
we have seen was when Rob Mackay took 9/133
(3/37 and 6/96) back in 1970 against Yallourn.
Batting partnerships are so important one our best
in a grand final was between Bloomy and Rob Fox
which was worth 108 in 2002 against Yallourn
North. All partnerships are important and so often
a good lower order partnership will influence the
outcome of the game, the best of the lower order
partnerships was a 53 in the seconds between Brad
Cox and Jamie Hoggins in 1996 and a 58 9th wicket
partnership in the firsts between Wellsy and Jason
Stevens against Morwell in the 2005 grand final as
Stevo stuck around with the rampaging Wellsy. Tim
Cranwell and Laurie Marks put on 50 for the 9th
wicket in the winning grand final for the firsts in
2000.
Bridle Road Pizza joined us this year as a club
sponsor and this has been a great partnership. The
pizzas are second to none in the Morwell area, so
next time you are thinking of take away then give
the team at Bridle Road Pizza a go and avoid the
big national companies.

ON THE THRESHOLD
This season we have 15 players who are ready to
break the ice and become premiership players.
Included in this are Rob McKinley, Alfie, Pat
Farrant, Jamie Brierley, Jeremy Brewer, Matt
Brewer, Brad Aitken, Trent Roberts, Aaron Farley,
Shayne Vallance, Zac Smith, Luke Vandyke, Paul
Dawson, Mitchell Cowell and surprisingly Brendan
Evans hasn’t got one yet after nearly 140 club
games which just goes to show how hard
premierships can be to win. Good luck lads let’s
hope your team mates can lift for you and deliver
of course with your help.
For the best in training in the local area if you are

Centre this week have 1 foot in each camp as they
are also a sponsor of the Moe Cricket Club so one
can only assume that they can’t lose this weekend.
HE COULD HIT A CRICKET BALL
Rob Embelton from the Morwell Cricket Club was
telling a story recently about John Hehir when both
were playing for Morwell Tigers. Rob was asked if
he had played cricket before and he stated he was
at the other end of the pitch when John Hehir
belted 210 at the Morwell Tech School. Some
younger Morwell players questioned whether
Hehiry could play cricket and Rob was quoted as
saying that he hit the ball so hard that he hardly
had to run. For the record John played great cricket
for Latrobe, he played 62 club games and smashed
1750 club runs and also took 64 club wickets
including a hat trick back in 1969 when he picked
up 6/28. John held the most club runs in a season
for many years when in 67/68 he compiled 872
runs before a young Bloomfield came on the scene
and passed this milestone in the season of 98/99
when he made 1025 for the season. John smashed
3 centuries for the club with the best being 158 in
1985, the others were 108 not out and 103 not out
in the season of 1968. John was a very
accomplished cricketer and became a life member
of our club in 1986/87.

PAST PLAYERS
It was great to hear from a number of past players
last weekend who still support Latrobe. Ian
Copeland called after the games last weekend to
see how we had got on, Copey was a champion of
the club making 2790 club runs with 2653 in the
firsts and was an excellent close in fieldsman.
He played in two premiership teams and was a
member of the first ever first grade premiership.
He was selected in the Latrobe Greatest Team of
All time and was also in the first grade team of the
90’s and with Bloomy holds the club record 3rd
wicket partnership worth 281 made on 30/1/1999.
Past player in Nick Clarke commented on face book
that he loves keeping up with the news from the
club through the Globe and it is good reading. Nick
played 141 club games with 5 in the firsts, he made
2205 club runs, took 60 wickets and the highlight
of his career was in 1997 when playing in the
LATROBE GLOBE
23 March 2013 – Grand Final Edition
seconds against St Vincents with us looking down
the barrel, in desperation the skipper needed to
change something and threw him the ball and he
produced an epic over when he claimed a hat trick
(3/4) to snatch victory away from the Vinnies. Olly
has never forgiven that captain as the next over he
was thrown the ball and also nearly got a hat trick.
Craig Jorgenson is another who always remains in
contact, he was a great player and a very good
bowler who took 121 club wickets. A big game for
Craig was back in 1982 when the thirds needed an
outright to get into the finals, the skipper sent
Jorgo and one other to make it happen and Jorgo
cleaned up the Willow Grove team by taking 13/84
for the match to get us over the line. (7/49 & 6/35)
Jamie Hoggins contacted the club and wished us all
the best for today, Hoggo played 175 club games,
making 3208 runs and played in 4 premiership
teams. He is best remembered when he purchased
a pair of spikes missed the game on the turf so he
wore them on the hard wicket, that could have also
been the game when he sported a G banger onto
the field. Past Champion and coach in Peter Mahon
always keeps in contact through skype and wanted
to know how the club went and then asked who
we were playing, when it was mentioned Moe he
just shuddered and grumbled their going for eight
in a row, and added that it can’t be done we will
win that one. Pete played just two seasons with
the club and worked at the Top Pub with his
brother in-law in Dave Lewis, they got the word
around that there was a very good cricketer just in
town, and of course we recruited him down when
all clubs were making a charge. Two loyal club
members every night for three or more weeks
would sit in the bar after hours and drink with him
this was going on for some time but we eventually
asked him what do you want to play and he stated
“a pair of runners” that was quickly settled even
though the rumour was that he was getting
$10,000. Pete won the first grade player of the
year award in 92/93 and again in 93/94 as well as
the club batting and bowling averages for Latrobe.
While in 93/94 he added the CGCA and club
bowling average awards to his player of the year
award. Also in touch with us last week through
email was the Old Fox in Freshy and Mark Meredith
who made mention of the efforts of all the
contributors of the Latrobe Globe. These players
were all part of the pioneer days of the club which
was building up for something special and for the
players who have a chance for glory today just
have a think about those who made this club so
great and how your success will impact on them.
When things get a little tough think of the
contribution made by others and dig deep not just
for yourself, your team and your team mates but
for all those that have come before you.
Carol and the team at PBA Financial Group have

MILESTONES
Tim Cranwell took his run tally to 8424 and could
quite easily take his career tally past the 8500 mark
with a blast from the past innings.
Steve Grover needs only 8 more runs to become
the 2nd club member to reach 8000 runs and will
get those in the first over or 2 that he is out there
today.
Bloomy today needs 34 runs to bring up 7700 club
and first grade runs and is very determined to shut
a few people up.

23 March 2013 – Grand Final Edition
Pat Farrant took his best bowling figures in the
firsts in last weekend’s semifinal with an
impressive 3/8 and looms as a big key in the
outcome of todays game.
Burra needs 76 more runs to make it to 5000 club
runs and after the season that he has had to date
no one would doubt him.
Glenn Steele is still ticking away at the runs and
now and needs only 135 to make it to 2000 club
runs, but if that seems to hard he just needs 104 to
bring up 1000 runs in the seconds, make it today
Stainless Steel.
Matt Brewer made it 300 runs for the season in the
seconds and has become a key contributor who
shouldn’t play too many more seconds games.
Peter Mooney has to play next season as he plays
his 299th club game today, maybe the bye and the
forfeit cost him from playing his 300th today, or
one less day at Wilson’s prom. Should get the ok
from Ruth to saddle up for one more year, played
this long and it would be rewarding to make 300 to
become the 9th club member to reach this
outstanding milestone.
News is that Groves is going on next year as he has
brought a new bat so the run chase for second spot
will be on again next season with Groves leading on
7992 runs and Moons on 7782 also breathing down
their necks comes Bloomy with 7666 runs.
Need a bus or coach to get you and the crew to the
next function? Make sure you recommend Mick
Zomer and his team to anyone that is looking for a

Monday to recover.
UNPLEASANT
No names to this story to protect the innocent.
But a supporter came to watch the firsts game last
Sunday when another supporter stated “Gee your
fat”, the quick reply was “Yer but your ugly and I
can lose my weight but you can’t lose your ugly
face”. A froth or two later and they were still
friends.
And another ugly incident happened in the 1st’s
game when Taddy was given out caught behind,
threw the bat and became more ugly as he
returned to the pavilion. One youngster from the
club stated later to his mum that Taddy said the
“F” word twice and also some other words. Not a
pleasant scene in front of a large crowd. Craig
Giddens stated after the game if it had been him
he would of got 13 weeks, Taddy received a Code
of Conduct and the skipper gets one also because
he never controlled his team mate. Maybe the club
should introduce a “Suspended sentence system”
to completely shut this behaviour down. Unless we
were all wrong and Taddy was questioning John
White what was his tip for the races, and when he
replied Bradman Taddy mentioned severely that
can’t **** win. Not a good look for the club and
one which best not be reproduced this weekend.
We have all heard about the Brendan Burger and
most of us witnessed Stiffy struggle with it earlier
in the season. Don’t forget that when you are
heading to or from Melbourne call in at BK’S in
Trafalgar and refuel with a coffee, coke or
something to eat. Once again pass on the
opportunity to support the big multinational and
show your support to a loyal club sponsor.

GOLD MEDAL
Josh Bloomfield was fighting at Box Hill last Sunday
at the Tae Kwon Do championships and won a gold
medal, good effort for a small squirt. It was the first
time he had beaten this opponent who
represented Victoria in the National
Championships last year and saw a blue belt beat a
more fancied red belt. Maybe it is a sign that he
may make it through to represent his state this
year.
PARTNERSHIPS
We always mention the importance of partnerships
and the impact that they have on the outcome of
the game, there was none better than the one that
took place in the firsts last week when we were
chasing 131 and had slumped to 6 for 79. There
were some nervous supporters getting around but
along came Sir Patrick and the luck of the Irish as it
was St Patrick day and they combined
magnificently to take the score to 133 with both
Pat and Rob not out at the end and a partnership
worth an unbeaten 54.
The best in the seconds was when we seemed to
be struggling at 4/64 Aaron Farley (who always digs
deep) and the reliable Tim Cranwell put on 59 for
the 5th wicket then only a small but valuable one
when Glenn Steele and skipper Del put on 27 for
the 7th wicket.
In the thirds the opening stand was worth 69 when
we were chasing 77, Burra was on fire and played a
classic innings smashing 59 in 10 overs while
Moons contributed 6.
With plenty of land near by the time might just be
right to look at a block of land and when you do
make sure you build with the best. Great to see
Nick “Wonder Boy” Celima down supporting us last
week so you never know he could land the gig of
building your new ranch.
FIELDING
Another vital part of the game to win finals is our
fielding, and at training the last few weeks the
fielding aspect has picked up. Thursday before the
semi training would have run until 7.30 or maybe a
bit later, with the emphasis on fielding drills. This
paid off in the semifinals with no dropped catches
and in the firsts, Taddy took a blinder just getting
his hands under the ball, and the safe hands of
Alfie in slips made a difficult catch look easy, while
the keeping of Duncs was excellent with two neat
stumpings. In the seconds who weren’t in the field
for too long only 20.1 overs, Mick Zomer had a
good game behind the stumps with no byes and
two neat catches, Trent Roberts has become a vital
member of the team and took a clean catch. In the
thirds Paul Dawson could only blame himself for
not getting a wicket when he grassed a high caught
and bowled chance, the call should have been the
keepers catch with Zac Smith doing an excellent
job behind the stumps with a fantastic run out
early when he back flipped the ball to hit the
stumps, and he also perfected a neat one handed
catch low down. Jamie Coltman who had started
slowly on the field picked up the tempo and took
an easy catch for him and also completed a direct
hit to run out the last bat. May this form from all
teams continue today and tomorrow.

CONGRATULATIONS
Well done on a long journey by Moe’s Matt Clarke
who claimed his 900th senior wicket in last week’s
semifinal. A great effort, he now has 902 to his
name and could finish his career on that figure as
our bats will deny him their wicket this weekend.
LOOKING AHEAD
Young Jacob Bloomfield taking notice of the
honour boards last weekend stated what happens
when he and Josh win the Club Champion award as
no one will know who is who. It may be 20 years
down the track but the six year old is already on
the ball. Someone from the years to come will have
to remember this major problem as Bert and Viz
definitely won’t be around.

UMPIRES FOR TODAY
Tony McMillan and Wayne Mills have the firsts
game against Moe to be played at Morwell Turf
starting at 11am. In the seconds at Peter Siddle
Oval starting at 12 will be John White and John
Wirz. And finally in the thirds we have Bob McKee
and Rob Vesty officiating on our number 2 ground
starting from 12 o’clock also. Good luck to all the
umpires may they have a game where they are not
noticed and give consistent accounts of their
abilities throughout the weekend.
GREAT NIGHT
A rewarding night at the CGCA presentation last
Wednesday night for the club where we came
home with a number of awards. The Prestigious
Club Championship which we hadn’t won since
2006/07, makes it number 11 for the club. Alfie
cleaned up when he made the first grade team of
the year and also took home the batting average
and aggregate awards. Rob McKinley joined Alfie
with a place in the first grade team of the year. Del
won the aggregate bowling award in the second’s
and Groves shared the third grade player of the
year with two others all receiving 12 votes.
Other significant awards was the Life Membership
of the CGCA awarded to our Life Member in Bruce
Dalgleish and Tony McMillan being named the
umpire of the year. And in more great news for the
club both Matt and Jeremy Brewer were selected
in next season’s Peter Siddle Squad.
The Latrobe Cricket Club appreciates the support
that has been shown to us over the last couple of

PUNTERS CLUB
Well the big news about punting happened last
night at Moonee Valley races (and we should know
the result) Black Caviar was going for win 24, with
the support of a sold out crowd. But the biggest
news of the punting week came locally, when our
umpire friend and league President in John White
had a huge win at the races. Always has a daily
double at Melbourne before he heads off to his
umpiring duties (maybe he should also check if he
has turned on his hearing aid) but came to the TAB
and no races in Melbourne but they were being
conducted at Bendigo. He didn’t like the double so
checked the fields and found a horse called
Bradman racing so he thought, Bradman 100’s
should I put a hundred on him, but it was priced at
$41 so he settled for $10 each way and of course it
got up and paid $44.70 the win and $9.60 the
place, not a bad $500 pickup. Our punters never
had a bet as no Melbourne races, but why not
listen to the central umpire like Taddy does.
As always’s Pro Rent are a great supporter of our

COMMENCED
The AFL footy started last night, never seen it start
before the cricket grand finals are played but no
doubt this will become the norm in years to come.
March is still cricket season and many clubs have
agreements with council that they have their
reserve from October 1st through until March 31st,
and footy are creeping in on us. They are making
good cricketers and footballers decide what sport
they want to play with a local example being
Thomas Long who is unavailable today as he must
front for Casey Scorpions if he wants to be on their
list. Ben Ainsworth of Morwell couldn’t play
recently as he was made to commit to Gippsland
Power and we would all remember a few years
back when start player Funky Duncan missed out
on a premiership as he had to front for a bonding
session for Gippsland Power. But back to the real
football the premiership betting has Hawthorn as
favourite at $3.75, followed by Collingwood at
$6.50, then comes the Eagles and Swans at $7, the
Blues and Cats at $11, the Crows and the Dockers
at $15 and the Bombers at $17. Forget the rest.
Betting for the brownlow is also out with Garry
Ablett, Trent Gotchin and Jobe Watson all favorites
at $9. An unbiased tip is the Cats for the
premiership it is lateral thinking they won
premierships in 2007-2009-2011 and what comes
next 2013. In the Herald Sun 19 tipsters were given
the exercise to pick the premiership team and this
is how it tallied up. All on six votes were Hawthorn,
Eagles, Magpies and then the Swans got one vote
which was from Paul Roos. Bring on the real
football.
The Valley Trophy Centre as always do a great job
with getting all our trophies to us in a timely
manner each year. Nothing is too much trouble, so
if you are in need of a gift for someone special then
call in and see Annette as they have many products
available that might just suit your needs. And for
those that don’t win a trophy you can always go
and buy yourself one.

GOLFING
The other Sunday when Olly wanted to test out his

to needed a new golf bag and when he got it out
Olly yelled where did you get that from and of
course it was a Magpie bag. Rob Tewierik, Dave
Evans and Bert went golfing to Merimbula for 4
days starting last Sunday, they were due back on
Thursday so Evo could have his input into the
Grand Final teams, Bert had a more important
reason to come back after he was summoned to

replied the only thing that will be swirling will be
what’s in your gut.
MUST BE IN TROUBLE
On the Thursday before the semifinals, Burra was
getting a beer when someone called him Dean. He
had a funny look on his face as he stated “I’m only

definitely thought that he had done something
