Start Your Engines…
In this race-theme party activity, take turns
speeding cars down parallel tracks in a Drag
Race to see who’s fastest!
Parents will
need to help
Make sure you have enough Hot Wheels® cars for each guest to borrow one, set up
your race tracks as outlined below and have each guest pick their favorite car. It
might not be a bad idea to ask your guests to bring their Hot Wheels® to the party.
The Game
Race two or three cars at a time until everybody has raced each other and you’ve
determined the fastest car. Award medals and ribbons to all race entrants and
special prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Track Set-up
Build your race track with two or more lanes parallel to each other. Take turns racing
cars down each lane. If you have enough tracks, three lanes are the best because
kids can race three at a time, giving more cars a chance to race in different groups.
A gravity track starts with a straight drop down into a long straightaway. Give
yourself at least 12 feet of track per lane for a fun race.
Clearly mark the finish line at the end. Add in a single
loop and/or jump ramp if you want, just
be sure each lane is laid out exactly the
same to be fair.

Starting Gate
For a fair start, you want all cars lined up in parallel at the top of the track. Use a
flat piece of cardboard to hold the cars steady, then quickly lift it straight up and out
of the way to simultaneously release cars down the track. Adults should help with
steadying cars on the starting line and lifting the gate.
Finish Line Markers
Print and cut-out these Finish Line flags, folding and glueing as shown. Set the flag
markers along your finish line, standing one in the middle of each lane. An adult
serves as the finish line judge and makes the winner call, by spotting which lane’s
marker knocks out of the way first.

Game Play Tips — Start Your Engines
With lots of children present, you want to keep the races moving so that kids can
have fun watching the competition, but also taking lots of turns.
Race entrants can line up with their Hot Wheels® cars in hand, in whatever order
they want, and race against whomever they want. After each race, they can get
back in line or wait for a friend who is still in line (so they can get in line together
and race against each other the next time).
You just need one adult to load and release cars at the starting gate and another
adult at the finish line to judge which lane wins.
If you want to present awards, keep a record of how well each entrant does during
their races. Limit each entrant to the same number of races by distributing the same
number of race tokens to everyone; have the starting-gate crew collect tokens each
time an entrant joins a race.
Officials at the finish line keep track of the race results, tallying wins for each car.
Total numbers of wins in each category earns 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies.
If you set-up the race as a competition, it’s important to maintain fairness. Try to
accommodate imperfections in the track set-up, false starts, interferences, etc. It’s
okay to give kids a “do-over” if a mistake occurs. Have fun racing!

Smash and Bash…
In this action-packed competition, kids
compete for points in an all-out smash
and bash obstacle course!
Parents will
need to help
The Game
Instead of racing to see who finishes first, players set-up the track with an obstacle
course, then smash and bash into as many objects as they can!
Track Set-up
Use the same downhill race track set-up as described before. But, this
track is pre-set with small, lightweight obstacles which are knocked
down for points.
Obstacles
®
Build a stack of cups to knock down. (Hot Wheels cups available
from Party City work great for this!) Position cups on the track
as shown.
Game Play Tips – Smash & Bash!
Assign point values to all the objects you will be setting up on the track. For ease of
tracking, you can assign 10 points per object. Any point system is fine, provided it’s
consistent from player to player.
Kids take turns racing their car down the track and knocking down objects. An adult
keeps tally of points earned for each child. After three rounds, the player with the
most smash and bash points is the winner!
Party City carries all the supplies you’ll need for an awesome Hot Wheels® party.
Along with Hot Wheels party decorations, plates, cups & napkins, your local Party
City store also carries Hot Wheels® racing medals, ribbons and trophies which you
can use as prizes for the action-packed activities described below. Have a great party!
