Honors Biology Unit 5 Study Guide: Cell Reproduction 2012-2013 Objectives: HINT**: These are the things you will be tested on at the end of this unit. 1. Diagram and label the major events from fertilization to development of an embryo to birth in terms of number and specialization of cells. 2. Explain when totipotent, pluripotent and progenitor stem cells originate, and how this is related to differentiation, or how cells become specific cell types. 3. Compare the processes of mitosis and meiosis in terms of: chromosome number (haploid/diploid), number of cells produced, genetic similarity of daughter to parent cells, and the number of divisions. 4. Identify the number of chromosomes present in parent and daughter cells in the process of mitosis. 5. Given the number of chromosomes in an adult of a species, determine the number of chromosomes in its gametes. 6. Describe the events of each stage of the cell cycle; identify major structures involved in each stage. 7. Explain the possible results of loss of control in the cell cycle. 7. Diagram each step of mitosis. Include the following organelles or structures: spindle, chromosomes, nuclear membrane, presence or absence of nucleolus, centriole. 8. Explain the process of fertilization in animals 9. Identify the number of chromosomes in gametes and somatic cells as diploid or haploid 10. Compare the advantages and disadvantages (to the population) of asexual and sexual reproduction 11. Describe three types of asexual reproduction 12. Identify the normal number of human chromosomes, including the total number, number of autosomes, number of sex chromosomes. 13. Correctly determine the gender of an individual from his or her karyotype 14. Explain how gender is determined from the chromosomes present in an individual’s cells 15. Using a microscope, locate and identify cells in: interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. Looking at these cells, determine whether cytokinesis is occurring. Vocabulary: You will be quizzed on the memorization of the following words at the beginning of the unit. By the end of the unit, you should understand the meaning of each term in the context of the unit. (* represents definitions not found in book) gamete chromosome *somatic cells chromatin binary fission homologous chromosome budding cancer clone *daughter cell interphase *parent cell mitosis autosome meiosis sex chromosome cytokinesis haploid differentiation diploid totipotent fertilization pluripotent progenitor cell cycle karyotype Resources: Text: Postlethwait, J.H., & Hopson, J.
