Technology Transfer at the Lebanese
University
Lebanese University, Doctoral School for science and
technology, Tripoli-Lebanon
by Ahmad Diab
RESUME
Outlines
• Industries (society) have needs & researcher has
Knowledge.
• Link between needs and knowledge.
• Transfer center and incubators.
• When publishing & when patenting?
• Startup.
• Applied research at Lebanese University
• Examples.
RESUME
Problems and solutions (closed loop)
• Real word has a lot of problems.
• Industries like to make business.
• Should find solutions for world problems.
• Solutions are with universities.
• Solution found by researcher (Professor, PhD students, …).
• Industries sell new products.
RESUME
Link between needs and knowledge
• The researcher do research essentially to publish
(mainly theoretical).
• Researcher don’t have any idea about industrial
needs.
• Industrials don’t have any idea about the research
axis in universities and their innovation and results.
RESUME
Technology Transfer (Incubators)
• Department of relation with industries.
• Department of relation with research center (Labs).
• Incubations department.
• IP department.
• Sales and commercialization department.
RESUME
Publishing OR Patenting?
• Publishing give you:
• Citations.
• High ranking.
• Fill your CV.
No Innovation
• Patenting give you:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Rights.
New product.
Licenses.
Money.
Jobs.
Startup.
And finally publications!!
Innovation
RESUME
Startup
• Patent give you new product.
• You can sell it or sell licenses to industries.
• Licenses let you build your own startup.
• Patent and startup open the door for researcher to
be recruited.
RESUME
At the Lebanese University
• We encourage researcher to do applied research.
• We encourage them to get in contact with industries
and the society seeking for their needs.
• We encourage them to patent their results if they were
innovative.
• And finally to build their startup with the help of many
incubator such as (LSTP, Berytech, …).
RESUME
Applied Research
• Researcher at LU communicate to many industries :
•
•
•
•
Hallab 1888.
Amine Roastery.
Wine.
…
• And society:
•
•
•
•
Minieh-Danieh Region.
Zgharta Region.
REVIVA Laboratory.
…
RESUME
Applied Research
• …
RESUME
Applied research
• Three among those research were patented.
• Researcher began their negotiation with industries.
• Many job promise are given for PhD students who
worked on the topic.
• Research began to made their startup pipeline.

Compact Ultra Wideband Directive Antenna for Indoor Wireless Applications
Lebanese University, Faculty of Engineering, Doctoral School, Tripoli-Lebanon
Ali HARMOUCH, Ahmad SAYED AHMAD, Wissam HARMOUCH
RESUME
Project Objectives
Design of antenna for indoor application:
1) Ultra Wideband
( LTE, GSM, UMTS, WiFi, WIMAX )
2) Compact Antenna ( Size < 15cm*15cm*1cm )
3) Directive Antenna ( D > 3 dBi )
4) Linear Polarization (Vertical or Horizontal)
5) Light, cheap and with low profile
6) Easy to mount in indoor environnent
7) Based on antenna printed technology making It easy and
extrimelly inxpensive for mass production
