About the College
Located in the foothills of the majestic Adirondack Mountains, the Hamilton campus is set
on a hilltop that overlooks the Oriskany and
Mohawk valleys of Central New York. The surroundings are rural and lush, consisting of rolling
terrain, gentle hills, wooded glens, dairy farms,
fine old houses and tree-lined streets. Yet Hamilton’s location puts it within easy range of New
York, Toronto, Boston and other major northern
metropolitan centers.
The College, chartered in 1812, is coeducational with approximately 1,800 students.
Its strength lies in highly regarded academic
programs administered by a deeply committed
faculty who welcome close collaboration with
students. Fundamental to a Hamilton education
is the faculty’s expectation that each student develops the ability to read, observe and listen with
critical perception, and to think, write and speak
with clarity, understanding and precision.
Hamilton graduates can be found making important contributions in nearly every professional
field, and because of the College’s educational
contributions to their success, alumni remain
enthusiastically loyal to and supportive of the
College.
As reflected in applications for admission,
Hamilton is considered one of the most selective
liberal arts colleges in the country. And, because
of the large number of applications that the College receives each year, the student body is unusually diverse. Students come to Hamilton from
all parts of the United States — indeed, from
all parts of the globe. In such an environment,
students learn to appreciate differences and prepare for life in an increasingly global society.
In evaluating prospective students, the admission committee looks for academic achievement
as well as personal accomplishments outside
the classroom. Thus, both the athlete who excels on the playing field and the musician who
participates in a community ensemble have the
talents the College is seeking.

Stockwell went 37-18 in two seasons at Oswego, including a
24-5 record in 2010-11. The Lakers captured the SUNYAC regular
season title with a 17-1 record, and the 17 wins set a program
mark for conference victories. Oswego went on to make the NCAA
tournament and advanced to the second round with a win against
Wells College.
Stockwell was named the 2011 East District Coach of the Year
by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Upstate Coach

SUNYAC Coach of the Year. One of his players was named a first
team All-American and the SUNYAC player of the year.
From 2004 to 2009, Stockwell was the head coach at Clarkson. He guided the Golden Knights to three straight postseason
appearances for the first time in program history from 2007 to 2009.
During that time, the team won 40 games.

and has been the head coach of
the Cortland Basketball Club youth

final seed. Clarkson upset the top two seeds to win its first league
championship and earned the first NCAA tournament bid in team
history. Stockwell and his assistants were named the league’s coaching staff of the year.
The Golden Knights were 15-11 and made the league championship semifinals again the following season. The 2006-07 squad
ended up 14-12 and played in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate Region championship.
Stockwell was an assistant coach at Canisius College from 1999
to 2004. He helped that program post a record of 20-11 in 2000-01
and that 20-win season was one of six in team history.
Stockwell coached at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse
for one season (1997-98). He began his collegiate coaching career
at Penn State-Behrend in 1998-99, when he helped the Lions to a
21-7 record and the ECAC South championship.
Stockwell played college basketball at Division II Le Moyne
College from 1992 to 1996. As a senior, he was a captain for a team
that tied the record for best season in program history at 24-6, won
the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) tournament and
played in the NCAA tournament. Stockwell averaged 21.1 points per
game that season. He made the Northeast Region all-region team,
the NECC all-conference first team and the academic all-district
team. Stockwell was inducted into the Le Moyne College Athletic
Hall of Fame in 2007.
After Le Moyne, Stockwell played professional basketball in
Northern Ireland’s St. Gall’s Basketball Association in 1996-97. He
also coached an under-19 boys’ team in tournaments across the
country.
Stockwell and his father, James, are the only father and son in
the history of New York high school basketball that have scored 2,000
or more career points. The younger Stockwell played for BellevilleHenderson High School and grew up in Ellisburg. James played at
Union Academy of Belleville for former Hamilton head coach Tom
Murphy when that team set a national record with 83 straight wins.
Stockwell graduated with a degree in economics and earned his
master’s in business administration from Canisius in 2002. He and
his wife Emily have a daughter, Katherine (9), and a son, Jameson
(6).

5 Hamilton Basketball ‘13-’14
Program Overview
Matt Hart ‘16 and team captains Greg Newton ‘14, Matt
Dean ‘14 and Peter Kazickas ‘14 lead the Hamilton College men’s basketball program into 2013-14. Eight players
started seven or more games in 2012-13 and four of those
eight return this season. Hart enjoyed a fantastic rookie
year as he ranked sixth in the NESCAC in scoring at 15.3
points per game, third in free throw percentage at 85.1
percent, tied for seventh in three-point field goals made
(2.04/game) and tied for 10th in steals (1.25/game). Newton also averaged in double figures in scoring with 10.5
points per game, and Bradley Gifford ‘15 ranked eighth in
the conference with 4.71 defensive rebounds per game.
Ken Click ‘13 ended his Hamilton career in sixth place on
the team’s all-time list with 103 blocked shots.
The NESCAC is one of the top athletic conferences in
NCAA Division III, and men’s basketball is no exception.
All three NESCAC teams that played in the 2013 NCAA
championship advanced to the quarterfinals and one captured the national title. The NESCAC boasts three NCAA
titles and three runner-up finishes. The conference tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA
championship.
The 2013-14 schedule is highlighted by the Hamilton
Invitational on Nov. 22 and 23. Utica College, Widener
University and D’Youville College round out the tournament field. The Continentals also play in a holiday tournament at Medaille College in late December. NESCAC
home games are as follows: Colby College (Jan. 17),
Bowdoin College (Jan. 18), Middlebury College (Feb. 2),
Tufts University (Feb. 7) and Bates College (Feb. 8). Hamilton plays inside 2,000-seat Margaret Bundy Scott Field
House.
In 2011-12, the Continentals started 8-0 and locked up
a NESCAC championship quarterfinal berth on the regular
season’s final weekend with wins against Tufts and Bates
in Hamilton’s first season in the conference. The Continentals ended up with a 15-10 record and were led by NESCAC all-conference pick Pat Sullivan ‘12, who went on to
play professionally in Ireland.
The 6-foot, 7-inch Sullivan became the 32nd player in
program history to score 1,000 points in a career in February 2011. He ended up ninth on the Continentals’ all-time
list with 1,439 points. Sullivan was a 2011 Division III East
Region All-District first team selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and was voted the Liberty
League offensive player of the year. Ephraim McDowell
‘12 was in fourth place on Hamilton’s all-time list with 164
3-point field goals made when he graduated.
From 1995 to 2011, the Continentals dominated the
Liberty League. Hamilton’s league record in 16 seasons
was 155-59, and the Continentals reached the league
tournament championship game eight times in 12 years.
Hamilton captured four tournament titles -- the last was
in 2006 with a 107-72 dismantling of Union College in the
final.
Hamilton appeared in the postseason 35 straight
years from 1975 to 2009. The Continentals have played
in nine NCAA Division III championship tournaments and
6 Hamilton Basketball ‘13-’14
advanced to the third round three times. Hamilton captured
10 Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate Region
tournament crowns from 1976 to 1992. Hamilton has won
more than 1,000 games since 1899 and passed the milestone in 2007-08 with 17 victories.
More Hamilton men’s basketball players have earned
more All-America awards than any other Division III program as 14 players have received 22 All-America honors.
Tsakani Ngobeni ‘07 was the most recent All-American in
2007, when he was voted to the second team. Two-time
All-American Michael Smith ‘92 holds the Division III record
with 1,628 rebounds in a career. Cedric Oliver ‘79 and
Michael Schantz ‘99 scored more than 2,000 points in their
careers. The Continentals own a 10-9 record in the NCAA
championship, and they are 57-28 all-time in postseason
play for a .671 winning percentage. Hamilton men’s basketball has won 20 or more games in a season 16 times,
including 23 victories in 2005-06. The program record for
wins in a season is 26 in 1990-91, when the Continentals
finished 26-1 and was ranked No. 1 in the final Division III
poll.
Eric Benvenuti ‘13 made the 2012-13 NESCAC Winter
All-Academic Team. Each honoree is a varsity letter winner
with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35. The
student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic
standing to be considered for honors.

About the NESCAC
Founded in 1971, the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) is a group of eleven highly selective
liberal arts colleges and universities that share a similar philosophy for intercollegiate athletics. The conference was created out of a concern for the direction of intercollegiate athletic programs, and remains committed to keeping a proper
perspective on the role of sport in higher education.
The formation of NESCAC originated with an agreement among Amherst College, Bowdoin College, Wesleyan University and Williams College first drafted in 1955. Along with these four institutions, Bates College, Colby College, Hamilton
College, Middlebury College, Trinity College and Tufts University are sustaining charter members. Connecticut College
joined in 1982, bringing the conference’s membership to its current total of 11 institutions.
NESCAC members believe intercollegiate athletic programs should operate in harmony with the educational mission of
each institution. The conference is committed to establishing common boundaries to keep athletics strong but in proportion to the overall academic mission of the member institutions. In pursuit of this mission, the presidents of each
NESCAC institution control intercollegiate athletic policy. Conference tenets are usually more restrictive than those of
the rest of NCAA Division III with regard to season length, number of contests and post-season competition.
NESCAC institutions also believe athletic teams should be representative of the entire student body. Admissions and
financial policies are consistent with the NCAA Division III policies that prohibit athletic scholarships and award financial
aid solely on the basis of need.
In 1999, the NESCAC formally became a playing conference and now sponsors 26 conference championship sports (13
for men and 13 for women). Member schools offer extensive and broad based intercollegiate as well as club and intramural opportunities for both men and women. With member institutions sponsoring an average of nearly 30 varsity programs, NESCAC provides more than 7,500 opportunities for participation in intercollegiate competition at the Division
III level. During the 2012-13 academic year, 52 teams participated in NCAA team championships. NESCAC studentathletes claimed nine individual national championships and NESCAC teams won seven national team championships.

Facilities/Sports Medicine
Consistent with the classrooms, laboratories, libraries,
studios and other facilities that support the academic
program, Hamilton College’s athletic facilities are exceptional by nearly any measure. The diversity and quality
of these facilities emphasize the school’s commitment to
the development of both the mind and the body.
The Margaret Bundy Scott Field House, a
55,000-square-foot multipurpose athletic structure,
contains three regulation-size basketball/volleyball courts
and seats 2,200 spectators. The field house has hosted
a number of NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament games and five Liberty League men’s basketball
championships. The field house houses a six-lane,
200-meter running track and indoor courts for tennis and
racquetball. A state-of-the-art Mondo FX surface was
installed in 2010, and can accommodate practice for outdoor varsity sports during inclement weather. The field
house was dedicated on Nov. 30, 1984, and was named
after the daughter of Harlow Bundy, Class of 1877.
Outdoor facilities on campus include Steuben
Field for football and lacrosse; the natural grass William D. Love Field used for men’s and women’s soccer;
the Walter H. Pritchard Track; the artificial turf Campus Road Athletic Field for field hockey; the Royce Baseball Field; the Ferguson
Intramural Softball Field and the nine-hole Tompkins Golf Course. The Russell Sage Rink, the William M. Bristol, Jr. Pool and the
Little Squash Center are the indoor facilities. The $6.1 million squash facility opened in October 2006 with 10 regulation-size courts,
including two with exhibition gallery seating.
The Charlean and Wayland Blood Fitness and Dance Center opened in October 2006. The center houses a dance studio, room
for aerobic/cardio training, space for resistance and weight-training, a multipurpose exercise room and a three-story climbing wall.
The state-of-the-art facility triples the current space for fitness activities on a campus where approximately 75 percent of the student
body -- and many members of the faculty and staff -- work out regularly.
The Blood Fitness and Dance Center is a 30,000 square-foot facility with 9,600 square feet used for fitness and weightlifting.
Precor cardio equipment is featured in the fitness area. The equipment includes elliptical machines, treadmills and stationary bicycles. The weight training equipment is by Cybex and includes power lift, hammer strength and positrac.
Sports Medicine at Hamilton College
The Hamilton College sports medicine staff provides excellent
medical care for all Continental athletes. The fully-equipped
sports medicine clinic is located in Margaret Bundy Scott Field
House and is convenient to all team locker rooms. The clinic
moved to a 3,400 square-foot, $1 million renovated area in
September 2006. The new clinic is four times larger than the old
space and features a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center.
The program is under the direction of head certified athletic
trainer Scott Siddon. Siddon has been a part of Hamilton’s staff
since 1996. He graduated with a degree from SUNY Cortland in
1992. Siddon went on to earn his master’s from the University of
Oregon in 1994.
Assistant certified athletic trainer Pat Giruzzi joined the
Hamilton staff in 1999. Giruzzi received his degree from Elmira
College in 1998. Pat became a Registered Orthopedic Technologist (ROT) in 2007.
Stephanie Kowell has been a member of the Continentals’
staff since 2011 and has been a certified athletic trainer since
2008. Kowell received her degree in physical education with an
From left to right: Kara McKeag, Scott Siddon, Pat Giruzzi
emphasis in athletic training from SUNY Brockport in 2008, and
and Stephanie Kowell
earned her master’s in education from Old Dominion University in
2010. She most recently worked at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and hails from the Syarcuse area.
Kara McKeag joined Hamilton’s training staff in 2011. McKeag received a degree in athletic training from Springfield College in
2009 and her master’s from East Stroudsburg University. She has athletic training experience at Lehigh University and most recently
served an internship at The Ohio State University.
In addition to the full-time training staff, a dedicated group of student first responders assist in the daily operations of the athletic
training facility. The sports medicine clinic is open from noon to 8 p.m. and other times by appointment on weekdays, and opens according to game and practice schedules on weekends.
