Incoming 3rd Grade Summer Assignments

Welcome to 3rd grade Cambridge!
We are looking forward to working with you all! To help best prepare you for the year
ahead, we have assembled some flexible learning opportunities for you in Language Arts,
Math, and Science. You will find directions for each of these tasks below.
Language Arts

This summer you have a chance to visit anywhere you want, through reading! Select one books from
the Sunshine State book list to read. These books are often offered in large quantities through the Pasco
County library system. You may choose from the provided elementary school list. After reading the books,
please complete one of the reading tasks and be prepared to share this the first week of school.

Reading Task Options
1- Make a book report t-shirt that reflects the book.
2- Create a timeline- include the important parts.
3- Make a true or false quiz- a friend can take it after they read it!
4- Make a book mark about your favorite chapter.
5- Write a letter to a friend informing him or her why they should
read the book.
Science
“Science and everyday life cannot and should not be separated.” ~Rosalind Franklin
With the help of each class member, we are going to assemble a classroom science scrapbook!
Students should take 2-3 photos of plants, animals, or humans. Write a one paragraph descriptive caption for
each, including an explanation of how this photo relates to science. Using the traditional 12x12 scrapbooking
paper, please create one scrapbook page using your photos and captions.
Math

You have been given four real world problems to answer. Choose and complete
two of them.
Task 1: Cookies!
You have 2 round cookies.
Part 1: Cut each cookie into fourths in two different ways by drawing lines.
Part 2: Explain how you know that each cookie has been cut into fourths.
Task 2: Ants!
Draw a picture and write a number sentence for each part of the task.
Part 1: Nathan’s mom has ants in her house. Ants have 6 legs. How many
ants could there have been if she saw between 20 and 30 legs?
Part 2: Make a model by drawing to show how you get each solution. Write a
sentence explaining how you know that your answers are correct.
Task 3: Our Pets!
Part 1: Sam asked his classmates, “what kind of pets do you have?” He made a
tally table to show the answers.
