small right across Australia. Every day over
50,000 users – from Emergency Services
Organisations (ESOs) and government
departments to local councils, corporate
and commercial organisations – count on
Telstra for reliable radio communications

radio engineers
•Predictable monthly usage fees
•The ability to take advantage of new

Our offerings include:
GOVERNMENT RADIO NETWORKS
Telstra custom designs, builds and
manages Government Radio Networks
(GRNs). Built to state government
and emergency service organisation
specifications, Telstra GRNs guarantee
service availability under harsh conditions
and emergency situations.
04 21st century managed radio networks
To provide extensive coverage and
interoperability across different user
groups, Telstra GRNs can be integrated
with the Telstra Next G® network, which
reaches 99 percent of the population and
provides more coverage in lifts, malls and
underground car parks than other wireless
networks in Australia.
We can also integrate in-vehicle solutions,
providing a single, simplified user
interface for business-critical emergency
dispatch services. Ideal for emergency,
utility and other organisations.
COMMERCIAL RADIO NETWORKS
Every day over 50,000 users count on Telstra
radio networks for reliable communications
and leading edge capabilities.

NETWORK INTEGRATION
MINIMISING RISK
Telstra can provide a managed only
service for customer-owned two-way
radio networks, microwave links, paging
networks and telemetry solutions.
Enterprise and government organisations
can use Telstra’s radio towers (over 22,000
nationally) to house a range of private
wireless infrastructure to support their
business operations. This service not
only includes the rental of tower space,
but also huts and power within the tower
compounds. It’s the smart way to extend
services without a costly investment in
new tower infrastructure.
To empower your staff to work more
productively in the field, we can integrate
other services with Telstra radio networks,
including Telstra’s Vehicle Access
Network® (VAN). This in-vehicle hub
integrates voice and data transmissions
across a range of radio, cellular and
satellite networks and delivers them
to a single user interface in the vehicle.
Using the Telstra VAN®, your field staff
can be contacted and obtain access to
high-speed data applications including
scheduling and mapping from almost
any location.
Radio networks are evolving rapidly
with the emergence of new digital radio
standards. That’s why it makes sense to
work with a partner like Telstra with deep
experience in building and managing
radio networks for major government
organisations across a wide range of
technologies. This brochure outlines why
our managed radio solutions and services
provide an unbeatable combination for so
many Australian customers.
We have over 100 experts nationally who
support our mobile radio end-to-end
managed services. This gives you access
to a team with deep experience and
skills, as well as one point of contact for
all your communication needs. We have
a reputation of not just delivering on our
impressive Service Level Agreements,
but going beyond the call to support our
customers in difficult times.
Telstra offers two commercial radio
services for businesses that need instant
and inexpensive communications for
vehicle fleets and people:
•Telstra Fleetcoms® is a national
trunked radio network operating in all
metropolitan areas as well as major
regional centres around the country.
•StateNet® Mobile Radio (SMR) is
a trunked radio network covering
approximately 96% of Victoria.
Organisations can quickly connect to
our Fleetcoms and SMR shared radio
networks and pay a monthly fee for voice
services, vehicle tracking, short burst data
and monitoring services on both mobile
and handheld devices. With a proven track
record and exciting technology roadmap,
it’s the smart choice for Australian fleet
companies who want reliable, missioncritical business communications.

BEST IN CLASS SOLUTIONS
Telstra has over 100 staff nationally
who support our mobile radio managed
services. With a team of dedicated radio
professionals managing your network
end-to-end, you don’t have to invest in
scarce radio expertise and train and
retain staff.
The Telstra experts managing your radio
network will also be familiar with the

manufacturers, enabling them to propose
optimal solutions to suit each of our
customers and their individual needs.
Our radio professionals have access
to expert resources, enabling them to

capacity planning, frequency planning, site
selection and installation of equipment.
And to keep them at the leading edge,
Telstra conducts quarterly training in
emerging technologies and trends.
To ensure your service is managed in a way
that’s efficient and consistent with world
best practice, Telstra staff are equipped

including Information Technology
Infrastructure Library (ITIL), ISO 20000

Telstra recognises the benefit in utilising
the expertise of commercial suppliers
and business alliances to deliver on our
customers’ needs rather than promoting a
single solution.
24/7/365 RELIABILITY
With Telstra owning and managing
your radio network, uptime and site
maintenance are our responsibility,
not yours. As owners and managers of
numerous mission-critical radio networks,
we understand what it takes to achieve
the continuity of service you need.
Our Network Operations Control Centre
(NOCC) provides 24/7/365 proactive
network management for our customers.
In this centre of excellence we combine
sophisticated telemetry monitoring
services with alternate routing to provide
robust business continuity management.
By capturing events within the network
we can alert NOCC staff to anticipate
problems and rectify issues – often before
service has been affected.
We also retain a highly trained team
of field technical specialists with the
knowledge to maintain and repair
equipment from a wide range of vendors
and provide preventive and remedial
maintenance 24/7 across our radio
networks.
SECURITY
Telstra will work with you to develop a
comprehensive security plan to suit your
needs. We also offer encrypted radio
services to keep your communications
confidential.
COST EFFICIENCIES
Telstra Managed Radio Networks are
a great way to reduce investment and
maintenance overheads. They also make

wireless network technology innovation,
maintaining a relevant radio network over
the next few years will be challenging

coming from the introduction of Long
Term Evolution (LTE) 4G wireless networks
around the country.
When you partner with Telstra, you
gain the benefit of ongoing technical
innovation. Telstra devotes significant
resources to research and development
in wireless technologies that have
yielded many benefits, especially for the
emergency services sector.
Telstra is committed to ensuring your
service experience is second to none.
That’s why we publish Customer Service
Standards so you know precisely what
to expect from our experienced and

As a national carrier and the owner of the
Next G® network, Australia’s fastest and
most far-reaching wireless broadband
network, Telstra is at the forefront
of wireless innovation. And with our
ownership and management of state
radio networks, we are well positioned to
support a smooth transition to a wireless
broadband and radio infrastructure
capable of offering mission critical

Notable innovations include our new
Satellite Cell on Wheels (SATCOW) mobile

on Wheels (MEOW); Telstra Emergency
Communications Kits (TECKs); State
Mobile Radio (SMR) Fast huts; and
Iterra® IP Satellite link. These field-tested
emergency communications solutions are
all backed by networks running at high

alternative power sources, spare parts and
replaceable parts required to maintain
and restore services in real-time for our
Managed Service customers.

innovation, continually researching
and field-testing solutions backed by
networks running with target operating
levels of 99.999 percent availability.
10 21st century managed radio networks
We’re also continually updating and
refreshing our programs. Recently we
developed and implemented a national
preventative maintenance program for
all sites, links and network exchanges,
as well as standards and procedures for
the construction and operation of Trunk
Mobile Radio networks. It’s innovations
like these that ensure continual service
improvements for Telstra customers.
As a result of our endeavours, our people
have won the prestigious Australian
Service Excellence Award from the
Customer Service Institute of Australia
as well as many other accolades. We’re
also the only Australian telco to become a
Certified Customer Service Organisation
and attain International Customer Service
Standard (ICSS) certification at the
highest level.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Telstra has proven its ability to serve
communities in times of need. We
provided rapid, on-the-spot assistance
to emergency services during disasters
in recent years, such as the Victorian

included quickly expanding networks and
providing equipment and expertise, often
at no cost.
Telstra provides network solutions and
