Stone Age - Northside Primary School

NORTHSIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL-YEAR 3 HALF-TERMLY LETTER
Summer 2016, 1st Half
Dear Parents/Carers
We follow a "Creative Curriculum" at Northside. This means that we teach the subjects through a cross curricular
topic. We try to incorporate as many subjects as possible but will also be teaching some subjects separately if this
seems more appropriate. Our topic this term is
Stone Age
We will be looking at the Stone Age this term.
Literacy: This term we research and create non-chronological reports on Stonehenge and on different aspects of
how people from that time lived. Towards the end of the term we will read ‘Ug: Boy Genius of the Stone Age’ by
Raymond Briggs. This funny, sad, yet wonderfully life-affirming story is about a misunderstood boy genius who refuses
to accept the limitations of the world in which he lives. We will use this book to create explanation texts
Numeracy: This term we will look at fractions including equivalent and adding and subtracting fractions with
the same denominator. In geometry we will make 3D shapes using modelling materials in addition to
identifying different types of angles. Towards the end of the term we will look at statistics where we will make
our own bar charts, tables and pictograms.
Science: Our topic this term is ‘Animals including Humans’. We will look at the types of foods animals and humans
need to grow. We will then revise the vocabulary of food groups; discuss different diets and the need for a balanced
diet. Towards the end of the term we will look at joints in the human body and the movements that each allow,
before looking at how muscles control every move we make.
British Values: As advised by the government, schools are now required to promote the following British values:
•
Tolerance
•
The Rule of Law
•
Democracy
•
Individual liberty
•
Mutual respect
This term we will look at Mutual Respect. The lessons will focus on understanding what mutual respect means and
how to show it in everyday life for example in the local community, playground and in the classroom.
Homework is given out on Fridays. Homework books should be handed in on the following Wednesday.
What you can do to help:
 Help your child learn their times tables and division facts (x2- x12) You could do this by helping them chant,
quizzing them regularly or going on to http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/maths/timestable/
 Encourage your children to do their homework and hand it on Wednesday (or earlier)
 Ensure PE kits are in school at all times-black shorts; white t-shirt and plimsolls or trainers.
 We will visit the library every Wednesday-please remind your children to bring in their books.
 To remind your children to bring their reading records to school everyday
 Read with your child or encourage them to read every evening and help them develop a love of books.
As always, if you would like to know more about what we are doing, or you have any questions about your
child’s work, please make an appointment to see me after school. If you are able to support our topic in any
way please let me know.
Yours sincerely
Miss Afua Kwarteng, Year 3 Class teacher
