Year 2 Term 1 Clever Cubs Songs & Rhymes – Lesson 7 – Ten In The Bed Learning Outcome: Students can count forwards from one to ten and backwards from ten to one. Some students will be able to write the numbers 1 – 10. Introduction to Topic: NOTE: this plan uses the book/song by Penny Dale with different animals. (Some versions of the song have only teddy bears or children). Draw a big bed on the board (or use template Student Resource 2 – enlarged to A3). Talk about what it is, what we use it for, do students have their own bed at home etc. Ask how many people could fit on the bed – when students have given some answers, put the Little One (Teacher Resource 2) on the bed and say “one” – continue adding the animals and counting till you have ten in the bed. Now take one away and count downwards to 1. Repeat the whole process but let students add/take away the animals. Talk about the animals – see how many students have the different toys at home. Play “Sleeping Bunnies” a few times using different animals from the bed. When students are lying down, introduce “roll over”. Have them roll to the right and then left all together. Read the book. Go over the words used when the animals fall out of bed. Re-read and get students to repeat the words (Teacher Resource 2). On an A3 sheet, write the numbers 1-10 and ask students to bring you items to correspond with a number. Put ten pictures on the board and ask random students to take away some. Count how many are left etc. You can also make this a colour lesson – Student Resource 4. Main Activity: 1) Ten in the Bed picture – enlarge bed template to A3 and students add the animals (can be coloured first – Student Resource 1). 2) Or just make the bed with card, add 10 coloured pillows and a cover. Students can then make the puppets to put into bed. 3) Make a number book 1 -10 – Students can choose a different animal for each page and older students can draw their own. Supplementary Activities: Ten in the Bed finger puppets – attach the pictures (Student Resource 1) to the finger puppet backing template on Student Resource 2 (may need to reduce pictures) or on lolly sticks. Number pyramid – Student Resource 3. Copy onto A3 and cut the individual rectangles. Students can put them together like a puzzle. © 2012 ESF Educational Services Limited Kindergarten English Language Curriculum Clever Cubs Year 2 Term 1 Page 1 of 11 Year 2 Term 1 Clever Cubs Key Vocabulary: Activities to be included: Numbers 1 -10, roll over, little one, different Story – 1) Ten In The Bed (Penny Dale) animals Differentiation: Songs – see attached Colours, falling out of bed words Games – “Sleeping Bunnies” Reflection: Role-play the song with students acting as different animals.
