Irvine Health has 90 large ambulatory clinics, and over 1000 physicians.
They serve about 3.1 million people in Orange County. UC Irvine Health

Challenges
Retire costly legacy healthcare information system, while
making 22 years of patient data available going forward
UC Irvine Health (UCI) was maintaining a legacy healthcare information system
that included twenty-two years of electronic health record (EHR) data and
wanted to harness the power of their data to deliver care more agilely,
effectively, and affordably. Although the data was theoretically available to
clinicians, it was “view only” and required that users open a new application
each time they wanted to access the old records. The cost to maintain the
system’s mainframe was $500,000 per year.
Frustrated by the availability of data and waste of resources the legacy systems
were incurring, UCI began looking for options to more effectively leverage their
data across systems. They knew that data warehousing solutions were often less
than successful — marked by significant costs, locking data into static/fixed
models, and limited use of data. The goal was to retire costly legacy healthcare
information systems and realize value from big data by consolidating many data
sources into a single, cloud-native environment.
Our Solution
UC Irvine turns to Clearsense for help
UC Irvine Health, with Clearsense’s help, could move all of the data for 1.2
million patients into the Clearsense data ecosystem known as Inception,
allowing the hospital to retire its legacy systems. The archival of old data to a
secure cloud environment allowed the data to be easily accessible through the
hospital’s EHR. Under the direction of Charles Boicey, Chief Innovation Officer
for Clearsense, UC Irvine Health directed real-time data feeds into Inception,
allowing the hospital to realize new value from existing data.
