::STAGE 1:: CLASS: ______________ DATE: ___________ GROUP: _______ Instructions: 1. Experiment will be conducted in groups. Everyone in each group must participate in the given activity. As an ancient Chinese proverbs state: “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand” 2. Everyone must inculcate scientific attitudes and nobles value in conducting scientific investigation. 3. Handling apparatus and materials safely. 4. All the observations and the results recorded in the table in a worksheet. Apparatus: Test tubes, dropper, test tube rack, batteries, bulb, connecting wires with crocodile clips, carbon electrodes with holders, 100 cm3 beaker, glass rod, stopper with delivery tube, spatula, rubber stopper, boiling tube, test tube holder, measuring cylinder Materials Solution X Cyclohexene Unknown solution, distilled water, organic solvent, blue litmus paper, pH litmus paper, pH test paper strip, universal indicator, methyl orange, and phenolphthalein, magnesium ribbon, copper(II) oxide, calcium carbonate, wooden splinter, lime water Prepared by: CIK NUR HARLYANA BINTI HARUN SMK ABDUL RAHMAN TALIB, KUANTAN ::STAGE 1:: EXPERIMENT 1: “WHO AM I?” Procedure: 1. Two test tubes are labelled and placed in a test tube rack. Solution X 2. About 1 cm3 of unknown solution is placed into each of two test tubes. 3. About 2 cm3 of distilled water is added to test tube I and the mixture is shaken. Cyclohexene 4. About 2 cm3 of organic solvent is added to test tube II and the mixture is shaken. 5. A piece of dry blue litmus paper is dropped into each of two test tubes. 6. Any changes that occur are observed and recorded in the table. 7. Steps 1 to 6 are repeated using pH litmus paper, pH test paper strip, universal indicator, methyl orange and phenolphthalein. “WHAT CAN I DO?” EXPERIMENT 2: Procedure: Solution X 1. A beaker is filled with unknown solution until it is one-third full. Cyclohexene 2. About 25 cm3 of organic solvent is added to the beaker and the mixture is stirred. 3. Carbon electrodes are connected to the bulb, negative and positive terminal of the battery through connecting wires. Then, the carbon electrodes are dipped in the mixture as shown in the diagram. 4. Observation is recorded in the table. Cyclohexene 5. Steps 1 to 4 are repeated by replacing organic solvent with distilled water. Prepared by: CIK NUR HARLYANA BINTI HARUN SMK ABDUL RAHMAN TALIB, KUANTAN ::STAGE 1:: ***Each group only needs to run ONE of three experiments. Please tick (/) the experiment that will be conducted in an empty box provided. EXPERIMENT 3(a): Solution X 1. About 5 cm3 of unknown solution is placed in a test tube. Cyclohexene 2. About 2 cm3 of organic solvent is added to the test tube and the mixture is shaken. 3. Magnesium ribbon is cleaned by sand paper and then is dropped into the test tube. 4. The test tube is closed to collect the gas liberated. The gas is tested with a lighted wooden splinter. 5. Observation is recorded in the table. 6. Steps 1 to 5 are repeated by replacing organic solvent with distilled water. EXPERIMENT 3(b): Solution X 1. About 5 cm3 of unknown solution is placed in a test tube. Cyclohexene 2. About 2 cm3 of organic solvent is added to the test tube and the mixture is shaken. 3. One spatulaful of copper(II) oxide powder is added into the test tube and the mixture is shaken. 4. Observation is recorded in the table. 5. Steps 1 to 4 are repeated by replacing organic solvent with distilled water. EXPERIMENT 3(c): Solution X 1. About 5 cm3 of unknown solution is placed in a test tube. Cyclohexene 2. About 2 cm3 of organic solvent is added to the test tube and the mixture is shaken. 3. One spatulaful of calcium carbonate is added to the acid powder is added into the test tube. 4. The test tube is closed with a stopper fitted with a delivery tube dipping into lime water. Any change to the lime water is noted. 5. Steps 1 to 4 are repeated by replacing organic solvent with distilled water. ~END OF EXPERIMENT~ Prepared by: CIK NUR HARLYANA BINTI HARUN SMK ABDUL RAHMAN TALIB, KUANTAN ::STAGE 1:: Data & Observation EXPERIMENT 1: Solution X Blue litmus paper pH test paper strip pH limus paper Universal indicator Methyl orange phenolphthalein In distilled water In organic solvent Cyclohexene Place the litmus & pH paper in the space provided.
