Presently, LED-based examination and surgical overhead
lights have one thing in common: they all are based on
large arrays of white or multiple color LEDs. This
approach made sense at the advent of the technology,
when the performance of LEDs was not as advanced and
a large number of LEDs was needed to deliver the
required light output. Knowing the photometric
properties and stray light control was compromised, the
industry focused on marketing the pleasing aesthetic of
the new fixtures.
The LED-arrays currently in use require complex electric
harnessing, mechanical focusing, and thermal
management. This complexity increases the number of
components and risk for failure. Moreover, it increases
the overall weight of the design, requiring accordingly
heavy and expensive suspension systems.

Utilizing state-of-the-art LED technology, OSRAM
developed a central source lighting concept for medical
examination and surgical lights that addresses all of the
issues presented by current lights. In OSRAM’s
innovative central source concept, a PCB narrowly
packed with high CRI-LEDs funnels light through a
tubular reflector to a primary reflector. Similar to Halogen
or HID designs, the light is released into a larger main
reflector, allowing perfect beam control and homogenous
illumination, minimizing stray light.

Introducing ITOS ® PHASER® 3000:
Powerful Light Source for Fiber Optic Applications
ITOS® PHASER® 3000 is a powerful, long-lasting module
that combines LEDs and solid state lasers to generate a
compelling luminance, comparable to 300W xenon
lamps. In November 2014, ITOS® PHASER® 3000
received the prestigious R&D100 award. This award
recognizes the module’s innovative approach to bridging
the gap between existing white light LED technology and
the desired performance levels for a wide range of fiber
optic applications in healthcare and science.
Similar to white LEDs, ITOS® PHASER® 3000 combines
yellow light and blue light to generate white light,
achieving a comparable spectral distribution.
ITOS® PHASER® 3000 is unique in that both channels of
light have individually-controllable sources. While a highpowered, blue LED still produces the blue light, the
yellow light of the ITOS® PHASER® 3000 is generated by
a powerful array of semiconductor lasers exciting a small
piece of phosphor where the highly-focused laser energy
is converted into yellow light. The optical path inside
ITOS® PHASER® 3000 is designed to keep the laser light
within the enclosed unit; therefore, the module is
considered a laser “class one” product.
6
Due to the separate color channels, the mix of yellow and
blue light can be precisely controlled. This color
management ensures a very stable color temperature of
the white light over a large range of constant current
dimming and over the entire lifetime of the module.
The number of utilized solid state lasers allows each
component to run well below the maximum specified
current and temperature, resulting in minimal forced
cooling noise. Operating the components within their
comfort zones, as well as the multiple, separate drivers
powering the lasers, enhances the reliability of the
module.
While ITOS® PHASER® 3000 was specifically developed
for fiber optic applications, the same technology has
applications in the automotive, entertainment,
and projection markets.
Above White LED design compared to high-power output
ITOS® PHASER® 3000 addresses the main disadvantages
of xenon lamps and white LED lights, while delivering
unparalleled performance and benefits. These
disadvantages of xenon lamps are a short lifetime as well
as UV and IR emissions while white LEDs do not deliver a
performance matching a 300W xenon lamp. The color
temperature of white LEDs is not stable during dimming
and over the module’s lifetime.
—— When used in endoscopes, ITOS® PHASER® 3000 can
deliver up to two times more light at the distal end.
—— The module’s thermal design can help reduce the
noise associated with cooling.
—— All light-generating components in ITOS® PHASER®
3000 are operated well below their maximum
specified currents and operation temperatures,
ensuring maximum reliability of the total system.
Compared to xenon lamps:
—— ITOS® PHASER® 3000 has a lifetime of up to 30,000
hours compared to 300W xenon lamps with a typical
lifetime ranging from 500 hours to 1,000 hours, depending on the application.
—— ITOS® PHASER® 3000 does not emit ultraviolet or
infrared radiation.
—— ITOS® PHASER® 3000 delivers all generated light
within a half angle of +/- 22 degrees, resulting in
minimal light losses and accordingly low temperature
rise within the application.
—— ITOS® PHASER® 3000 is significantly more energy
efficient.
ITOS ® PHASER® 3000: Primary Benefits
—— Affordable: Compared to a 300W xenon lamp,
ITOS® PHASER® 3000 lasts up to 60 times longer and
uses significantly less energy.1)
—— Quiet: The module’s thermal design and low heat
generation reduces the needed cooling and
associated noise.
—— Top Performance: ITOS® PHASER® 3000 maintains a
very stable color temperature and color rendering
index over its lifetime.
—— Rapid Integration: ITOS® PHASER® 3000 is a compact
system that can be easily integrated into new fixtures.
Compared to straight, white LED lights:
—— ITOS® PHASER® 3000 generates three to four times
the luminance of a regular white LED-solution.
—— The module has built-in redundancies, so if one of the
light-generating components fails,
ITOS® PHASER® 3000 continues delivering light.
