Government
backdown over
ward closure
NSW health minister Jillian
Skinner and north coast National Party MPs have been
called on by the opposition
to give a written guarantee
that the government will keep
Murwillumbah Hospital’s
children’s ward open.
It follows an apparent
backflip by the state government on its controversial proposal to close the ward, with
the announcement over the
weekend that the plan had
been put on hold for further
consultation with doctors.
But the so-called ‘pause’
on the closure has been dismissed by the state opposition as a ploy to win favour
for next year’s election.

Ever at a loose end on Thursdays? Well
this week you are in luck as councillors
and staff will once again sit in a room
and talk about the best way to administer your rates/taxes. Unfortunately the
alternative is much, much worse and we
haven’t figured out anything better yet.
Just some topics up for some scintillating discussion and a vote include
protecting regional food production
from mining, opposing gas exploration
in water supply catchment at Bentley,
supporting the Mullumbimby Big Picture Show forum on the town’s future

SAE graduate hits ground running with ABC
A recent graduate from SAE
Byron Bay has landed her
first professional gig with
new ABC drama, The Gods
of Wheat Street.
Filmed on location in Coraki, Casino and Lismore, the
six-part series explores the
lives and hearts of a modern
Aboriginal family and will
premiere Saturday April 12.
Camera operator Samantha Poulson told The Echo she
got the opportunity to meet
with writer John Bell and
producer Lois Randall while
shooting at the 2012 Byron
Bay Writers’ Festival on behalf of SAE.
‘I am very appreciative

of [SAE Byron Bay film lecturers] Russell Burton’s and
Anne Chesher’s guidance and
advice,’ she said.
They encouraged her to
introduce herself to Lois and
John and she was later successful in landing her first job
as ‘camera attachment’.
She says the ABC produc-
tion cast and crew were like
family. ‘During production,
we all knew that we were involved in creating something
special, something unique.
‘The energy and buzz on
set was exciting, and from
what I understand, there’s not
usually that kind of intimacy
on most sets.’
