It’s a new day. It’s a new century for ABC Recycling and the winds of changes are moving across the landscape of the company. There are new people, new yards, and opportunities looming on the horizon. From one horse and a buggy to six booming yards across the province and over 130 employees ABC is poised on the edge of a new era. Currently under way, ABC Recycling is integrating its visual brand, expanding its locations, and streamlining operations. This means big changes for ABC Metals in Surrey, ABC Recycling Campbell River, Bold Salvage and Action Metals as they all change their name and their visual branding to integrate with ABC Recycling. These moves add inner strength and efficiencies to all companies as all sites can now share in one website, expanding marketing materials, and access to more people, services and machinery across the province. ABC Recycling founder Joseph Yochlowitz would be proud if he could survey all the changes the past 100 years has brought to the company. And to celebrate those changes ABC has lined up an exceptional year: teeing off with a Golf Tournament in June for employees, inviting our communities and friends to a ABC Metals Recycle For Life event on August 4th and toasting 100 years of success at a Gala Dinner on October 27, 2012. Brent MacKinnon Manager, Corporate Human Resources As Manager of Corporate Human Resources, Brent MacKinnon is responsible for employee and labour relations, compensation and benefits at ABC Recycling’s six operations throughout British Columbia, and is also involved in health and safety management of the company. Brent joined ABC Recycling in 2011, bringing more than 25 years of experience in consulting and the resource sectors. Brent began his career in human resources management in the mining industry, working with Silver Mines Ltd. for four years. He then moved to the forest industry, holding senior positions with TimberWest, Weldwood of Canada and West Fraser Mills Limited (formerly Weldwood). Prior to joining ABC Recycling, he was Principal of Peak Consulting, providing human resources and safety services and advice to small and medium-sized businesses on Vancouver Island. Taking Action In Kelowna Action Metals Recycling was founded by Lane Ketler in 1990. Lane’s recycling involvement dates back over 30 years. He learned the metal business from his father, who co-owned a metal recycling business in Lethbridge, Alberta. Lane started his business in Kelowna because he could see the need for a metal recycling service in the growing community. In 2007, Action Metals partnered with ABC Recycling. This partnership recognized each company’s strong family values and “business-on-a-hand shake” mind-set. Together they opened a brand new location in Kelowna located at 3258 Highway 97 North. Now in the Spring of 2012 Action Metals is adopting the ABC brand. Lane Ketler says, “The whole family is excited about seeing the ABC brand extend right across the province. We built a solid business with over 30 employees throughout the Southern Okanagan and now we’re positioned to move ahead as part of the ABC Recycling Family.” Vancouver Island Backs New Brand Change ABC Recycling, Campbell River opened in 1993 with the purchase of the property on Terminal Place from the Knowles Brothers. Over the years they have serviced all of Vancouver Island under the capable leadership of Rick Coombs who is delighted with the recent decisions to integrate the various recycling yards under one integrated brand. Rick commented, “It simplifies operations and extends our ABC Recycling name from Vancouver Island right across the province. It is an excellent move and we are right behind it.” A Bold Move for Bold Salvage In 2011 Gus and Michele of Bold Salvage, based in Terrace BC, opened up the newest member of the family in Prince George in partnership with ABC Recycling. These two yards are both rebranding to ABC Recycling this Spring. They will continue to be “Boldly Go” on offering the same distinctive service and commitment to their customers, by the same great family, but now under a new name, brand and logo. “This is part of our ever expanding business vision. We expanded to Prince George and now we are expanding our horizons by becoming part of ABC’s overall branding. We have been working together for years. This is really just a formality for our family, but the move shows the rest of the province and our competition our growing strength and reach in the marketplace.” Reports Gus. Don Jones Maintenance Manager As Maintenance Manager, Don Jones is responsible for all aspects of the company’s equipment maintenance. Don joined ABC Recycling in September 2011, bringing 25 years of hands-on trade, supervisory and management experience. Don began his career as a Maintenance Mechanic in the ski industry. He then moved to Lafarge Cement Canada as a Maintenance Millwright, and held positions at Ingram Micro, Red Resort, SAMMS Inc. and most recently XL Quality Industrial Services Inc. ABC Metals Now ABC Recycling in Surrey In 2007, ABC Recycling opened up ABC Metals located on 54th Avenue in Surrey led by Anthony Dizy. This yard specializes in the recycling of scrap cars and is home base for the Kidney Foundation of Canada, BC Branch’s long time car donation program, Kidney Car. Recently ABC Metals has been re-branded to the ABC Recycling name. Anthony Dizy says, “Everyone at the yard is looking forward to the change. It is a sign of how we are becoming more and more integrated. The continuity of the name throughout all the yards across the province adds to our company strength.” Anthony has worked for ABC Recycling for over 10 years and he says, “This is really an exciting time in the company. We have a solid family background and reputation but with the addition of new people and new yards we are taking a strong proactive approach that says we are a force to be reckon with in the future.” Creating a Legacy with the Burnaby Hospital Foundation KAREN BICHIN Manager, Community Relations As Manager of Community Relations for ABC Recycling, Karen Bichin is responsible for the company’s corporate social responsibility activities including community relations, sponsorships, donations and charitable campaign activities. During her university years, Karen spent a year at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, worked at the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts (Montreal), and interned in the marketing department of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Karen joined ABC Recycling in 1999, learning the family business by working in administration, sales and brokerage before becoming Manager of Human Resources. She was named Manager of Community Relations in February of this year. ABC Recycling is committed to giving back to the communities where we live and work. In this, our 100th year, we are pleased to announce two legacy projects with the Burnaby Hospital Foundation that will be announced to the public this Spring. A gift of $30,000 will be used to purchase a piece of equipment called a Transport Isolette. And a gift of $50,000 will be paid out as a bursary of $5,000 per year for ten years. This award will be called the ABC Recycling Educational Award and it is intended to provide financial assistance for educational and professional certification opportunities for health care professionals currently serving in the field of Maternity and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) at Burnaby Hospital. The establishment of this fund honours the legacy, values and commitment of ABC Recycling as one of the hospital’s long time philanthropic supporters in making a difference in the health and well being of our most precious patients and health care professionals.
