CALL TO ENTER 2017 CANADA 150 PROJECTS Festival Dates: June 22 - July 4, 2017 10635 – 95 St Edmonton, AB, Canada T5H 2C3 www.theworks.ab.ca Application Deadline: Monday, October 31st, 5 PM MST, 2016 Present Voices: Canadians Sharing Stories through Participatory Art To mark the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, The Works International Visual Arts Society is calling for three participatory art projects that actively build community and tell the complex story of Canada’s people and places. Artworks will be presented during The Works Art & Design Festival, June 22 - July 4, 2017, and may include community outreach in the form of workshops or other engagement during the festival, or in the months leading up to the festival. This call is open to all Canadians. To ensure diverse representation, demographics of the artists will be considered in the selection process. We encourage indigenous, recent immigrant, female, and francophone Canadians to apply. Selected artists must have experience involving community in the creation process. Selected projects will meet the following objectives: • Involve active and authentic engagement with the public • Be accessible to diverse participants and engage diverse communities • Invite meaningful contributions from participants • Include storytelling that inspires reflection on present day Canada This initiative is made possible by the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, a collaboration between the Edmonton Community Foundation, the Government of Canada, and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast. About The Works The Works International Visual Arts Society advances the development, awareness and appreciation of art and design in Canada and provides a forum for the exchange of ideas between artists, designers and the public. The Society produces The Works Art & Design Festival, the largest free, outdoor art and design festival in North America. Between 1986 and 2016, over 7 million visitors have experienced more than 16,000 artists and designers from every continent, in 1,300 exhibits in and around Edmonton’s downtown. 11,000 volunteers have contributed 1 Information for all festival participants Individuals or groups may submit multiple proposals. Each application must be separate and complete, including all application requirements (see Application Form). 1. Call to Enter Application Deadline The Works office must receive your application no later than Monday, October 31, 5 PM MST, 2016. Acknowledgment of receipt will be sent via email upon the closing of the deadline. All information will be kept confidential except for information provided for promotional purposes. 2. Artwork Loan Agreement All selected participants must enter into a contract with The Works. 3. Promotional Materials The Works will produce printed and electronic publishing, site signage and walk-a-ways for each exhibit. All promotional material independently produced by the artist or organization must provide logo and presentation credit to The Works and must have final approval signed off by The Works before production. 4. Selection Criteria Three projects will be selected. Lead artists will represent indigenous, recent immigrant, female and francophone Canadians. The following will be considered when selecting projects: - Completeness, accuracy and clarity of application - Active and authentic engagement - Artistic merit - Accessibility to diverse participants - Feasibility of project 5. Liability Insurance As a public event, The Works is required to carry comprehensive general liability insurance (CGL). Please check all that apply to your Canadian Identity: Indigenous Recent immigrant Francophone Female Please tell us how you heard about this call: Application Requirements ¨ Artist Statement, which must be concise, complete and clear (not a physical description) specific to the project and how it addresses the objectives of the Canada 150 project (up to 300 words). ¨ Project Description (not an artist statement). A detailed physical description of the project. Include title, description, optimal space and facilities requirements, technical requirements, necessary amount of time for creation, install and dismantle, level of required technical and production support, etc. Include anything that will contribute to a clear and complete visualization of how the project will be produced and be presented to the public (max 1 page). ¨ Detailed Timeline including any advance preparation, outreach activities, installation, and dismantle (1 page). ¨ Complete, projected, global budget. Artists will be paid a fee of $2000. The Works will cover project costs such as supplies, travel, marketing, production, installation, space rental and preparation as required for the execution of the project, provided that the costs are included in the application and accepted with the approval of the project. ¨ Visual Documentation. A portfolio of 5-20 quality images of work representative of the proposed project. ¨ Visual Key corresponding to all documentation in the aforementioned portfolio. Each entry must include inventory number corresponding to the item, artist name, title of artwork, date, medium, dimensions, photo and credit (1 page). ¨ Curriculum Vitae of artist/s (max 2 pages). ¨ Reference from a past presenter. ¨ Complete answers to the following questions (1 page): 1) In what projects have you been involved that engage others in the creation of a work of art?
