Seasonal Summer Camp Counselor Job Description
Syringa Mountain School Summer Day Camp provides Waldorf-inspired activities in a school
setting. Camp is held for 6 weeks this 2016 summer. Camp begins June 6th and runs till August
19th weekly, Monday through Friday. Campers will explore the natural world through HANDS on activities such as gardening, cooking, hiking, movement and/or outdoor play. Campers and
staff will get down and dirty, observe nature, discover the growing plants and animals in the
garden. Campers will weed, water, harvest, and taste the fruits of their labor along with many
other fun and engaging activities. Gardening activities will encourage exploration, creativity and
healthy eating. Children will express their HEART with art from singing to painting, chalk
drawings to handwork. Challenge their MIND by using their HEAD to solve riddles, make
nature observations, and play fun games. Day Camps vary with ages and topics each week, see
below for details. Campers will meet at SMS each morning by 9 am. Some camps will be
traveling frequently on field trip adventures (weather permitting) off campus daily to the river,
parks, pool, libraries, and nature preserves. All campers will return to SMS by 4 pm daily.

 July 18-22 Incredible Insects & Big Bugs
 July 25-29 Wet ‘N’ Wild
FLEDGLINGS: 7 to 9 year olds, rising second to fourth graders
 Aug 1-5 Feathered Friends
 Aug 8-12 Art in the Garden
WOLFGANG: 8 to 10 year olds, rising third to fifth graders
 Aug 15-19 Garden Chefs
Camp Details:
 Camp Hours 9-4 pm Monday to Friday
 Before and after care available from 8-9:00 am and 4-5:30
 Ratios of 1-8 counselor to children for Garden Sprouts & Fledglings 1-10 for Wolfgang
 Cancellation Policy: Staff maybe dismissed of work for cancellations of camp.
Notification will happen no later than two weeks prior to camp beginning.

 Demonstrated experience working with children
 Ability to assist teacher and co-lead various recreational, crafts, Waldorf inspired activities

Ability to communicate and work with a variety of ages and skill levels

Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and self-control
leadership experience in school and/or community is preferred

We require the following of our Summer Camp Teen Counselors:
Requirements:
 Pass Idaho State run background check
 16 years of age pursuing high school diploma or graduated and older
 CPR & First Aid certification
 Need to be available for spring camp collaboration meetings and/or training which will be
announced.
 Available 7:45 am-5:30 pm, Monday – Friday from July 11th thru August 19th
o 8 hour Shifts will rotate with opener, closer and mid.
Counselor Responsibilities:
 Assist in facilitating age appropriate activities that keep children active and engaged with the
head, heart and hands
 Supervise, assist instructors and actively participate in all aspects of the campers’ day.
 Use group management skills to engage all children in daily activities
 Take primary responsibility for the health, well-being, safety and happiness of campers
 Greet parents and campers; assist with check in/out process.
 Learn the camper’s names and characteristics
 Recognize and respond to opportunities for group/individual camper problem solving
 Provide opportunities/positive choices for the group so that each individual experience is a
success
 Encourage respect for one another, nature, personal property, equipment and facilities
 Set-up and clean-up activities, assist in maintaining a clean atmosphere
 Set a good example for campers in all areas, including cleanliness, punctuality, clean-up
chores, rules, and sportsmanship
 Guide campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities
 Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations
and emergency procedures and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
 Prepare for and actively participate in pre-camp meetings
 Meet/communicate regularly with Director regarding concerns, updates, challenges
 Submit all required paperwork/timecard/days off request on time

 Public Transportation time spent commuting between site and excursions to bring campers to
and from places.

 Work occurs in Syringa Mountain School spaces such as, classroom and outside playground,
garden and farm environment. As well as public parks, rivers, pools, nature preserves and

 The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
Wage: $7.25 to $10 depending on experience

Selection Procedure:
A fully completed Application must be received by May 20th. This position is open until

Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a background investigation including
