These children made their First Holy Communion on Sunday morning. There were two other
children from the Wickersley Parish. It was a beautiful Mass which was celebrated by Father
Darren Reid from Doncaster. He spoke highly of the children’s demeanour and behaviour,
particularly notable as it was such a hot day.
Reilly O’Connor followed the preparation programme with these children, but was unable to be
there on the day. He will receive Holy Communion at a later date in the year.
Thank you to the parents who attended the Big Talk presentation last Thursday evening. I hope that
you found the input interesting. I also hope that it put you in a good position to question and
reassure your child/ren following the in-school presentations which took place on Wednesday of
this week.
Similarly, thank you to the parents of children in Y6 and girls in Y5 who attended the meeting with
the school nurse to discuss the puberty talks on Monday 3rd July.
The weekend the majority of the Y6 children are going on a residential visit to the Kingswood
Centre in Consiborough. They will be undertaking exciting and adventurous activities such as high
wires, leap of faith, zip wire and abseiling. We hope that they all have a thoroughly enjoyable,
memorable and safe weekend.
Please remember that school will be closed for all pupils (F1-Y6) next Friday (June 30th). This is
the last INSET day for this academic year. On this day the Y6 pupils will be attending their
secondary school of choice; either Maltby Academy or St Bernard’s High School. The expectation
is that they will go to their secondary school despite the fact it is an in-service day at St Mary’s
School.
St Mary Magdalene’s Parish annual Family Fun Day will take place on Sunday 2 nd July. Everyone
is welcome to attend.

The Y6 Leavers’ Mass will take place in St Mary Magdalene’s church on
Morrell Street at 6.30 pm on Monday 24th July. This will be followed by a
disco for the Y6 pupils in the school hall from 7.30 pm until 9.00 pm.
Parents are expected to remain with their child over this period. It will give
parents the opportunity to reminisce about the events of the last seven or
eight years. If any parent/parents would like to arrange light refreshments
for the evening please contact the school office. Funding is available for the
event.
The Leavers’ Assembly will begin at 9.30 am in the school hall on Tuesday
25th July.
School will close for the summer holiday at 1.30 pm on Tuesday 25th July.
Over the summer holiday the Reading Agency and libraries will be organising a summer reading
challenge. This year it will be titled “Animal Agents”.
How the challenge works



Children sign up at their local library and receive The Animal Agents collector folder.
Children borrow and read at least six books of their own choice during the summer,
collecting special cards to complete their folder and rewards along the way.
Library staff and teenage volunteers are on hand to advise and run family-friendly activities.
Children who complete the Summer Reading Challenge are presented with a certificate
and a medal.
It encourages parental engagement and family involvement in reading and helps your school
make links with the library and the wider community.
It allows children to become more independent in their reading when choosing books and
encourages using imagination and empathy to explore a text beyond the page.
It takes place at your local library and is a brilliant opportunity for extra-curricular activity.
It helps prevent the tendency for children’s reading to dip over the holidays and supports the
successful transition between year groups and stages.
It’s fun! It’s free! It’s local.
Sign up and have a go!
Thank you for your continued cooperation and support.
Yours sincerely
