FAZAKERLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL We welcome the children back

DATE: Spring Term 2013
We welcome the children back to the second term of Year 5 and hope they have
had a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas break. Thank you to all the children that
have started the new term wearing their smart school uniform. We have a busy
term ahead and look forward to seeing all the children in school on time everyday.
Numeracy
 Miss Stewart’s class will be covering shape including perimeter, area and
triangles. Also, they will be solving word problems using the four operations
(x, ÷, + and -)
 Miss Worsell’s class will be looking at fractions and their equivalent decimals
and percentages. Also, they will be using the written methods they learnt
last term to solve one and two-step word problems using the four operations
(x, ÷, + and -)
It would be great if the children could practise their times tables at home on a
regular basis as this will help them in their Numeracy work.
Literacy
The children will be reading ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightening
Thief’ by Rick Riordan and will be completing a range of written work
including writing myths and other fiction and non/fiction texts.
It would be great if children could read at home as much as possible and discuss
what they have read with an adult or older sibling as this will help them with
understanding and retelling skills. Also, we are encouraging children to keep
practising their joined handwriting.
Science
 Keeping Healthy – Children will learn about their personal
health, looking after their heart and how exercise can help with
this. Children will carry out a range of experiments including
investigating how exercise affects their body.
 Interdependence and Adaptation – Children will look at how
plants and animals need certain habitats to survive and what
feeding relationships there are.
ICT
The children will develop and build on a range of skills in Microsoft
Word, Excel and Publisher to support other areas of the curriculum.
