Commissioned service is defined as "Service as a commissioned officer that includes active status and active service as
provided for in section 14706" of Title 10
 The only exception to this rule is based in Title 10 Section 14706(a)(3), which excludes time a commissioned
officer spends while in an advanced education program for appointment in a special branch. Section14706(b)
goes on to explain that the officer's Reserve commissioned service prior to entering the advanced education
program to become qualified in a special branch does count toward years of commissioned service for MRD
purposes
Commissioned service in the following categories is creditable towards an officer’s MRD
 Selected Reserve: Troop Program Unit (TPU), Active Guard Reserve (AGR), USAR Control Group (Individual
Mobilization Augmentee (IMA)
 USAR Control Groups: Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), Annual Training (AT), Officer Active Duty Obligor and
(OADO)
 Standby Reserve - Active Status List
 Army or Air National Guard
 Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Air Force Reserve
 Active Component service with the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard
Commissioned service in the following categories is not creditable towards an officer’s MRD
 Standby Reserve - Inactive Status List
 Retired Reserve
 Inactive Army National Guard
 US Army Retired List, Permanent and Temporary Disability Retired List, and Army of the United States (AUS)
Retired List
 Retiree Recall – retired officers who are ordered to active duty from the Retired Reserve or the retired list under
Section’s 688(a), 12301(a), or 12301(d) and serves in his or her retired status
 A Soldier transferred from the Retired Reserve back to the Ready Reserve under provisions of Section 10145 is
not a recalled retiree and their service would be counted towards their commissioned service
