Overview
 PC, MAC, mobile phones, audio players, video players -
different platforms, different software
 There is no one standard file type for images, video,
documents, sound or compressed files. Each player uses a
different type file.
 Files you find on the internet may not open on your computer
without converting them into a file type that can be used with
an application on your computer. Such applications are Apple
Quicktime, Windows Media Viewer, and Real Player.
 Today to simplify, we will convert to MP4, which is a file type
that will open with Apple Quicktime. Quicktime is either
already on your computer or can be easily installed for free.

You need to know
 File types- extensions are the last three letters of
file name after the dot, for example, Flower.jpg is
a type of image. The name of the file is Flower,
the extension is .jpg.
 Example-- these are all different video file
extension types you might see: avi, flv, mp4,
mov, wmv, mpg, etc.
 Conversion- Changing from the type of file
available to the type of file you need. A
conversion program is necessary to do this.
Zamzar and Kick YouTube are examples of these
conversion programs.

Issues
 Teachers want to use the internet to obtain images,
videos, documents, and sound files for educational use
 Teachers need these files to be available offline as we
are not allowed to do video streaming
 The software to open these files may not be available
on school computers
 Even when free conversion software is available from
the internet, teachers may not be able to download it
due to the blocking of downloads, storage issues, or
school computer use policy

After this session you will be able to use the online
tools, Zamzar and KickYouTube to convert a video
file from a web page into another file type and save it
to show on your school computer.

files come in many different file types depending on
the software used to create and save them. There
are many educational videos on the web that can be
used in the classroom.
 Zamzar is one tool that can convert most of these file
types from one type to another which will allow you
to show it on your computer.
 Kick YouTube is a very simple solution for
converting and downloading YouTube Videos.

Solution 1- Zamzar
 Zamzar is an online tool easily converts common files
in a few clicks of the mouse and then sends
instructions to retrieve the converted file to your email
address.
 An advantage of Zamzar is that it not only converts
video formats, but also audio or music formats, image
formats, document formats, and compressed formats
 Just follow these step by step instructions…

Before you open Zamzar
 If you are going to convert a file from YouTube, go to
YouTube (www.youtube.com). Search and find the
video you wish to convert.
 Either write down the complete URL (address) or copy
it with Control C. You might want to do both to be on
the safe side.
Then open Zamzar
Http://www.zamzar.com

Type or paste the URL from YouTube in the box. If
you are converting a file on your computer, you can
browse to find it.

In the box at Step 2 choose the file type you
want. To simplify matters, today we will convert
to Mp4 which will open with Quicktime.

In the box at Step 3 type the email address where
Zamzar can tell you how to retrieve your converted file

In the box at step 4 just hit convert, and verify
the information that pops up by clicking OK

In several minutes, you will get an email
from Zamzar:
Click on the link in the e-mail to download
and save or open your converted file.

Tips for Teachers
You can also use Zamzar to download and convert videos
from TeacherTube, the teaching video resource site.
Many of the educational videos on YouTube are stored
here and this site is not blocked by our filter.
You can convert video into a variety of formats, including
mp4, avi, mpg, wmv and mov – helpful if you need to
use the video as a resource in a classroom without
internet access.
Since the district blocks YouTube, you can convert a
video from home, retrieve the file, email it to yourself at
school, save it to a flash drive, or burn to a CD to use in
classroom.

 Zamzar is free and has numerous
cost effective uses for file conversion in
classroom. It can be used to convert any
type of file, not just YouTube videos.

Solution 2--Convert and Download
YouTube Videos using KickYouTube
 YouTube is a vast library of videos for all content areas. As a
teacher, you can search YouTube to find multimedia clips
that would be fabulous resources for your classroom.
However, in addition to these useful videos, the are also
many R and X rated videos on YouTube. Therefore,
YouTube is blocked for schools.
 This week’s tool offers an easy way to download (save)
YouTube videos to your computer or flash drive so that you
can show them in your classroom - even if you aren’t
connected to the Internet!
 This is much simpler than using Zamzar, but is for
YouTube Videos only. It does not convert other types of
files like Zamzar does.

KickYouTube
Step 1
1. Go to: www.youtube.com Which we have unblocked
today since there are no students on campus.
Normally, you will have to do this at home since
YouTube will be blocked.
2. Locate the desired video.
3. Play a part of the video to make sure it is working.

Loading KickYouTube:
Step 2
1. Move your mouse into your browser's address (URL) window.
2. In the address bar, substitute the word “kick” for the www in
front of “youtube” in the URL. Leave the rest of the address the
same. The address will now be “http://kickyoutube.com/...
without the www
3. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
4. When the page reloads you will see KickYouTube’s menu bar at
the top of the window.

Saving (Downloading) the Video:
Step 3
1. Click to select the desired format (MP4) and then click the “Go”
button at the right side of the bar.
Note - You can experiment with a short video to see which format
works best on your computer. I recommend starting with MP4 for
Quicktime.
2. KickYouTube will take a little time to process. When it is finished,
the green “Go” button will change to a blue download button.
3. Right-click the blue download button and choose “Save link as” or
“Save Target as” or something similar.
4. This will open a window that will allow you to save the video to
the desired location on your computer. You will probably save it to
a CD, a flash drive, or to your computer to be sent in an e-mail to
yourself at school.
5. Once the video is saved, double-click to open it. It should open
and play in QuickTime.

1. Go to You Tube and find a video you want to

3. Use the tool bar above the video to select
the format. Select MP4. Select Go. Select
Down.
