“God, We Praise You for the Morning”
Dickey
Words and Music: Jim and Jean Strathdee (1984)
God, we praise you for the morning;
Hope springs forth with each new day,
New beginning, prayer, and promise,
Joy in work and in play.
God, we praise you for creation,
Mountains, seas, and prairie land.
Waking souls find joy and healing
In your bountiful hand.
God, we praise you for compassion,
All the loving that you show;
Human touching, tears, and laughter,
Help your children to grow.
God, we praise you for your Spirit,
Comforter and daily friend,
Restless searcher, gentle teacher,
Strength and courage you send.
God, we praise you for the Saviour,
Come that we may know your ways.
In his loving, dying, rising,
Christ is Lord of our days.
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Hallelujah, hallelujah!
Christ is Lord of our days.

“Jesu, Joy of Our Desiring”
Jesu, Joy (Werde Munter)
Words: Martin Janus (1661),
trans. Robert Serbour Bridges
Music: from J.S. Bach (1716)
Jesu, joy of our desiring,
Holy wisdom, love most bright;
Drawn by you, our souls aspiring
Soar to uncreated light.
Word of God, our flesh that fashioned,
With the fire of life impassioned,
Striving still to truth unknown,
Soaring, dying round your throne.
Through the way where hope is guiding,
Hark, what peaceful music rings;
Where the flock, in you confiding,
Drink of joy from deathless springs.
Theirs is beauty’s fairest pleasure,
Theirs is wisdom’s holiest treasure.
You, forever, lead your own
In the love of joys unknown.
Children’s Question Time
Your questions and wonderings are precious
in the sight of God.
Young people are given the first opportunity
to ask questions and the first opportunity to
respond.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
We come before God, acknowledging our struggles, our
brokenness, and our faults, and trusting in the love of the
risen Christ. Let us pray to God:
Holy God, in earth, sea, and sky,
you are there;
in everything we touch,
in everyone we meet,
your presence is around us.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
You we have not touched but trampled
in creation;
you we have not met but missed
in one another;
you we have not received but rejected
in the poor and outcast.
The Iona Community
(Silent confession)
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
And so we pray: Lord, have mercy.
RESPONSE: LORD, HAVE MERCY.
Christ, have mercy.
CHRIST, HAVE MERCY.
Lord, have mercy.
LORD, HAVE MERCY.
Mother God, blessed Jesus, Holy Spirit,
HEAR OUR PRAYER AND HEAL OUR HEARTS.
WORDS OF ASSURANCE
Hallelujah!
RESPONSE: HALLELUJAH! AMEN.
SUNG RESPONSE (GLORIA)

FIRST READING
ACTS 7: 55 – 60
The Stoning of Stephen
But filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed into
heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing
at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see the
heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the
right hand of God!” But they covered their ears, and
with a loud shout all rushed together against him.
FIRST READING
Then they dragged him out of the city and began to
stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the
feet of a young man named Saul. While they were
stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my
spirit.” Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud
voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”
When he had said this, he died.
Hear what the Spirit is saying to her church.
RESPONSE: THANKS BE TO GOD.
PSALM
31: 1 – 5, 15 – 16 (VU p. 758 pts. 1, 3)
RESPONSE: I TRUST IN YOU, YOU ARE MY GOD.
In you, O God, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to
shame.
DELIVER ME IN YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS;
INCLINE YOUR EAR; COME QUICKLY TO MY RESCUE.
I TRUST IN YOU, YOU ARE MY GOD.
PSALM
Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to keep me safe.
YOU ARE INDEED MY ROCK AND FORTRESS;
LEAD ME AND GUIDE ME FOR YOUR OWN NAME’S
SAKE.
Release me from the net that they hid for me, for you are
my protector.
INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMEND MY SPIRIT,
FOR YOU HAVE REDEEMED ME, O GOD OF TRUTH.
I TRUST IN YOU, YOU ARE MY GOD.
PSALM
My times are in your hands;
Deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those
who pursue me.
LET YOUR FACE SHINE ON YOUR SERVANT,
AND SAVE ME, FOR YOUR MERCY’S SAKE.
I TRUST IN YOU, YOU ARE MY GOD.
GOSPEL READING
JOHN 14: 1 – 14
Jesus the Way to the Father
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my
Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I
have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare
a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where
I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I
am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are
going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and
the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If
you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know
him and have seen him.”
GOSPEL READING
Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be
satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this
time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen
me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the
Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the
Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on
my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his
works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in
me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works
themselves.
GOSPEL READING
“Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will
also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do
greater works than these, because I am going to the
Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that
the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name
you ask me for anything, I will do it.”
The Gospel of Jesus Christ.
RESPONSE: PRAISE TO CHRIST THE WORD.
RESPONSE

Halle-, halle-, hallelujah!

“Christ Has No Body Now but Yours”
Words: Adapted from St. Teresa of Avíla
Music: Rick Gunn (2006)
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands but yours.
Here on this earth, yours is the work,
To serve with the joy of compassion.
No hands but yours to heal the wounded world
No hands but yours to soothe all its suffering,
No touch but yours to bind the broken hope
Of the people of God.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands but yours.
Here on this earth, yours is the work,
To serve with the joy of compassion.
No eyes but yours to see as Christ would see,
To find the lost, to gaze with compassion;
No eyes but yours to glimpse the holy joy
Of the city of God.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands but yours.
Here on this earth, yours is the work,
To serve with the joy of compassion.
No feet but yours to journey with the poor,
To walk this world with mercy and justice.
Yours are the steps to build a lasting peace
For the children of God.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands but yours.
Here on this earth, yours is the work,
To serve with the joy of compassion.
Through ev’ry gift, give back to those in need:
As Christ has blessed, so now be his blessing,
With ev’ry gift a benediction be
To the people of God.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands but yours.
Here on this earth, yours is the work,
To serve with the joy of compassion.

“He Came Singing Love”
Singing Love
Words and Music: Colin Gibson (1972)
He came singing love
and he live singing love;
He died singing love.
He arose in silence.
For the love to go on
We must make it our song;
You and I be the singers.
He came singing faith
and he live singing faith;
He died singing faith.
He arose in silence.
For the faith to go on
We must make it our song;
You and I be the singers.
He came singing hope
and he live singing hope;
He died singing hope.
He arose in silence.
For the hope to go on
We must make it our song;
You and I be the singers.
He came singing peace
and he live singing peace;
He died singing peace.
He arose in silence.

While singing, you are invited to turn to your
neighbours and sing this blessing to them.
Go now in peace,
never be afraid.
God will go with you
each hour of every day.
Go now in faith,
steadfast strong and true.
Know God will guide you
in all you do.
Go now in love
and show you believe.
Reach out to others
So all the world can see.
God will be there,
Watching from above.
Go now in peace, in faith, and in love.
Amen. Amen. Amen.
