STUDENTS INFORMATION LEADING TO AWARD OF BASIC TECHNICHIAN CERTIFICATED AND
ORDINARY DIPLOMA COURESES IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT FOR
ACADEMIC YEAR 2017/2018
1. Introduction
The Institute (IEDS) is a specialized Environment and climate Institute based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania,
aiming at providing professional training in the fields of environment and climate change for development
sustainability. It is registered by NACTE with registration no. REG/ANE/031P.
IEDS respond to the governments needs to implement its National Environment Agenda. According to
Environmental Management Act, 5 of 2004, Section 39; Environmental officers are required at Local
Government Authorities to coordinate all functions and activities geared towards the protection of environment.
IEDS offer educated experts with practical knowledge to fit in these positions.
2. Location
The Institute is located at Bunju B, Kinondoni District, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It is about 500 meters from
the new Bunju B, Soko jipya.
3. Courses Duration:
The Institute offers both long term and short term courses. The duration of the long term courses is as follows:



Basic Technician Certificate in Environmental Science and Management Course lasts for One Academic
year for Form Four Leavers.
Ordinary Diploma in Environmental Science and Management Course for Form Six Leavers lasts for two
academic years.
Ordinary Diploma course for those holding Basic Technician Certificate in .Environmental Science and
Management (NTA Level 4) from IEDS last for two Academic years
Both academic years are offered in modularized two Semesters.
The short term courses are offered between five days and three months. They are either tailor made or regularly
announced scheduled annual short courses on specific subjects. For more information about the current short

4. Students Application and Enrollment
Application is done directly at the institute. The application forms are available online www.ieds.or.tz and at the
institute as well. All applicants who meet the required admission qualifications have to apply via this system.
The application form fee is Tsh. 20,000/= paid directly to the finance unit.

Accommodation facility is optional. Students may opt to stay off campus.
NB: For student to be admitted has to pay a total amount Tsh. 800,000/=, the remaining amount to be
paid in three installments.
Costs given direct to students
A. Field Practical Training
Student direct costs: These are costs given directly to students by parents/Guardians/Sponsors as their
expenditure during semester field work and/or Industrial practical training for 56 days.
B. Meals
Parents/Guardians/Sponsors are required to provide at least Tsh. 5,000/= per day for meals
Please note the following:
a) All costs payable to the Institute are strictly non-refundable.
b) All payments should be paid via Bank Accounts;
c) Hostels are limited and priority will be given on first come first serve basis and those with special
needs.

bank pay in slip to finance Unit on arrival for official receipting
a) No student will be admitted to the Institute without full Semester required payments.
b) The Institute may make changes in the fees structure and amount without notice as it may be deemed
appropriate and inform you accordingly.
c) No student is allowed to deposit any funds to Institute's Bank account for personal use, as no refunds
for any deposited amount.

7. Students' Requirements
Students are obliged to bring with them the following:i.

Two (2) reams of photocopy papers, (NOP ATOP) each Semester to be submitted to the
Admissions office.
Laptop – for personal use (if possible, its not a requirement)
8. Subscriptions to Student's Organization
Every student is an automatic member for the student's organization and must contribute a membership fee.
9. Identity Card
Each student will be required to have four (4) passport size photographs (colored with blue background) for
processing of identity card and other official uses. Identity Cards will be available immediately after completing
registration at the institute.
10. Accommodation Facility
This facility is optional to students who want to stay off campus. The institute provides a room and bed at the
cost of Tsh. 180,000/= per semester. Other items associated with accommodation are the responsibility of the
student/parent/guardian/sponsor. Students deciding for in campus stay, after payment, shall have to sign a
residential contract, which is available at the office of the Dean of students.
11. Medical Capitation
The Institute provides basic First Aid for which all students must contribute Tshs. 50,000/= Students with
Health Insurance membership card will be required to submit a valid copy of it to the Dean of students on
arrival.
12. Discipline
Every student is expected to be exemplary in the society, that is good behavior and maintain self-respect in
accordance with the rules and regulations of the institute. It is the responsibility of the student to maintain selfdiscipline and respect of others. A student will be required to download a copy of Institute rules and regulations
also a copy of Institute By-laws when applying for admission. Students are strongly advised to bring attires that
are acceptable culturally and socially.
All students will participate in all national events as required by the Ministry including in the activities related to
the end of the month National Cleaning Day.

14. Seriousness in Studies
In order to graduate, a candidate will need to fulfill all academic session requirements and pass all examinations
(Continuous and end of semester Examinations). Students are advised to familiarize themselves with the
guidelines for continuous assessment and end of semester examinations.
15. Admission to the Institute
All selected students will be contacted for confirmation and then sent joining instructions and admission letters
through their respective e-mails and or Postal address. For further Information contact the addressed telephone

16. Workshops
Interested Students are given an opportunity to participate in national and international conferences on
Environment and Climate Change in Bonn, Germany in June of each year. The chances are highly competitive
and those who will be selected, the Institute covers registration fee, participation fee and certification costs.
The students will have to cover their visa, tickets and accommodation.
