Waste management in Australia is undergoing significant structural change.
This will lead to major and permanent shifts in the employment profile and skill-base.
In particular there will be growth in regional areas and a boom in the organics and
waste processing sectors.
WCS undertook a basic analysis of the shift in job demands to estimate the likely skill
needs and provide a basis for seeking appropriate support for the industry.
To accommodate the shifts in employment mix and skill base, the industry will require:
•
retraining of personnel to move them from work activities and/or job
classifications that will be in decline to those where growth is likely,
•
employment of new personnel with new skills for the growth areas, and
•
financial and material resources for training both the incoming and the
relocated personnel.

This data was used to forecast the service intensity
in each of the 17 regions around the country, the
type of domestic collection likely – RACV (driver
only) or RLCV (driver plus runners) – and the total

KEY FINDINGS:
•
The demand for new employees outside metropolitan areas will be
greater than for metropolitan areas – 32% cf 12% over 10 years.
•
The highest demand for new employees will be in NSW – 26% cf 19%
nationally over 10 years.
•
New employees with process plant knowledge and operating skills will
be the most critical skill shortfall area over the next 10 years.
•
If waste generation rates increase, (as might reasonably be expected)
the demand for new employees will be those forecast and double the
growth rate of GDP – i.e. > 4% p.a.
