4th Year - at University 1st Semester 2nd Semester Christmas

City of Launceston has always actively assisted in the training of and
creation of employment opportunities for engineering students. Every
year we will offer a cadetship to one 2nd year Engineering student to
continue with their 3rd and 4th year of Civil Engineering studies at
University.
The recipient of the cadetship will be offered 10 weeks work experience
in November-January, at the completion of their third year of study. One
year's fully paid work experience will then be offered to the student upon
completion of their fourth and final year of University and upon receipt of
their degree in Civil Engineering.
The variety of work to be offered at City of Launceston will include the
following experiences:
Construction field work

Operational maintenance field work

Contract administration and specification preparation

Design and drafting

Analysis and concept design in traffic engineering, drainage and
catchment management.

Hydraulic Modelling
The 10 weeks paid work experience at the completion of year 3 and 12
months paid work experience at the completion of year 4 are considered
part of the cadetship program and graduates must make themselves
available. Although we cannot guarantee permanent employment at the
end of your 12 month cadetship, past experience has shown that most
students who complete our program have been offered permanent
employment.

CONDITIONS AND BENEFITS
To be eligible as a beneficiary of this cadetship a student must not be in
receipt of any other cadetship, bursary or scholarship.
Students are required to undertake the full semester course load at the
University of Tasmania.
Students must present their scholastic results to the co-ordinator of the
cadetship program within two (2) weeks of their release date following
each examination period.
During work experience, students will be paid on a fortnightly basis in
arrears. Leave without pay will generally not be permitted unless in
exceptional circumstances (except between Christmas and New Year).
Students will be eligible for Superannuation from the day they start with
City of Launceston. Council will pay an amount equal to 12.25% of your
eligible gross salary into the Quadrant Accumulation Fund, the
Accumulation Tasplan Fund or another complying superannuation fund
or self-managed fund.
You will be considered an employee only for those periods where you
are undertaking paid awareness programs, work experience program or
for the one year period of work upon completion of University. At all
other times you will be considered a student receiving assistance but not
as an employee.
During the summer work experience program, casual employment
conditions apply - a timesheet is to be lodged for each pay period. You
will not accrue any annual or sick leave entitlements.
During your twelve month placement, temporary employment conditions
apply. Your annual leave and sick leave accruals will be calculated on a
pro-rata basis according to the ordinary hours you work. These leave
accruals are currently credited to an employee’s leave balance every
four weeks.
A student who is a recipient of this cadetship who fails two or more
subjects per semester, or failing a subject twice may have the cadetship
terminated without further notice.
Termination may also occur where a cadets behaviour at University or at
Council may bring Council into disrepute or as a result of poor work
performance.
Withdrawal or removal from the University of Tasmania course will be
deemed to be a resignation for the purposes of employment.
Should a student not fulfil the full term of the scholarship (including the
12 months post graduate employment) with City of Launceston, they will
be required to re-pay in full to Council funding received by them to
attend University in the previous two semesters.
