THE HKT SPIDER IN YOUR TREATMENT
PROGRAM IN DE WOENSELSE POORT
The order handed down to you by the court was a result of a criminal act. The offence you
committed was likely related to your mental state at that time. For this reason, the judge decided
that you need to get the behaviour which led to your conviction, under control. We call events that
preceded the offence ‘risk factors’, and to assess these we use an instrument called the HKT-30.
We can imagine that you do not fully understand what got you into this trouble. We are going to
help you find out what factors may have contributed to this situation. Perhaps you got into trouble
after using drugs and...
For example: using drugs makes you aggressive and suspicious towards other people.
Under the influence of drugs, it is likely you would reoffend. By treating you we want to help you:
1. learn how drugs (for example) may get you into trouble
2. learn how to manage feelings of aggression and suspicion
3. return to the community in a good and safe way.
Fo
You are first admitted to the Admissions ward. Together we will look into which risk factors need
to be addressed during treatment; some examples are:
• Psychotic symptoms (you see or hear things that others cannot see or hear)
• Substance abuse (drugs, alcohol. Did you take these and what was the effect? Were you able
to control the use?)
• Social skills (are you able to stand up for yourself and can you interact with people properly?)
• Attitude towards treatment (what do you think about the court’s ruling that you must undergo
treatment?)
The diagram may look like this at the beginning of treatment
At every treatment plan meeting we
look at the factors you have booked
progress with and which factors the
team may have to help you with. The
resulting scores are plotted into the
diagram. This shows in which areas you
are progressing and which factors you
may still be needing help and assistance
with. During treatment and daily activities
you will work on problems and learn skills
that will help you deal with people and
situations in a better and safer way. Each
improvement can lead to a positive
change in the spider diagram.
The problems we focus on together are hereafter called risk factors. These risk factors are
plotted in a diagram. This diagram highlights which risk factors we will need to address
together. Treatment plan talks are held with you to discuss treatment strategies and to determine
objectives.
Ideal picture after… a while. The flags are still there; you know which pitfalls you should
look out for.
After treatment, the diagram may look like this:
After showing sufficient improvement,
the team will discuss plans with you
with a view to rejoining society. Back
in the community you will come across
those risk factors (pitfalls) again. If your
treatment has been successful then
you will have learned how to deal with
those risks properly and you will stay
in control of your life.
If you have questions about treatment
or the information in this pamphlet,
just ask one of the staff members in
De Woenselse Poort; any one of them
will be able to explain the objectives of
the treatment offered here. Don’t hesitate to put your questions to the staff on
the ward, your personal coach or your
doctor.
We trust our working together will
prove amicable and fruitful.
