Enzyme Unit

LOCK AND KEY MODEL
Enzymes have a shape that fits a specific substrate.
The enzyme and substrate fit together like a lock and
key
ENZYMES end in -ASE
Enzymes- Proteins that speed up chemical reactions during metabolic
processes. For example, building glucose AND breaking glucose down
require enzymes
Metabolism- all chemical reactions that occur in living organisms,
including digestion and synthesis (building) of macromolecules
DIGESTION
Breaking large molecules (polymers) into
smaller molecules (monomers)
SYNTHESIS
Building Polymers by combining monomers
to form polymers. As in protein synthesis!
Building polypeptides (protein polymer) by
adding amino acids (monomers)
